Watched the 2013 SEC ship game

We have to come to the realization that CGM's offense is truly effective (and almost only effective) with a true duel threat QB. I know we (myself included) have made arguments that we can make this work with a pocket passer and we are only kidding ourselves. But his Tulsa team...don't care, weaker conference and athletes. But Chris Todd...we didn't win. But he is an offensive guru...sure, with the proper DT quarterback.
Watch the game, or the highlights, and you will see what his offense can be with a true DT quarterback. Every thing opens up. The play book, the running lanes, the receivers...all of it. It is high time we realize this. I see another so/so year with a QB that cannot make the defense commit to the zone read or at the very least move the pocket. It is what it is.

1 major problem....we don't have Nick Marshall. JF3 isn't even remotely on NM's level right now, as a passer....which is an indictment in and of itself.

Watching Marshall run that offense was a thing of beauty.

Totally agree. The op was not saying plug a DT guy in there now. The point was that we have to realize this offense is only effective with a DT qb. I guess I have gotten to the point of realizing is JJ the guy, no. Is Sean White the guy, no. And ultimately the problem is like you stated the one guy on the roster JFIII is not marinated enough. So that puts us back to where we were last year and if it goes like last year, there may not be a next year with CGM and company. Woody Barrett is still at a minimum a year away too.
At the end of the day, we are simply average at best without the necessary QB. And with out the necessary QB we may not see next year with this offense (at least CGM's offense). I have come to terms that 2010, 2013, and the beginning of 2014 should have been cherished because of the great dt QB play. We simply can't hang with what we have now, today, at the present time.

The good news is that all of of signees and commits are DT now. Who knows if Gus will be around to coach them though.

I know. And here in lies the problem(s). I can't believe that our evaluation of QBs can go from scorching hot, to cold as ice. I guess everybody thought JJ was a "can't miss" prospect but that has gone completely cold. Sean seems like a good guy but doesn't garner the respect of any defense.
Maybe I'm just venting/accepting reality/ becoming nega.

Last year was the first time we've had a pocket QB with any expectations of being good.
Johnson obviously looked terrible. Could it be because of the offense? Maybe. But his meltdown seemed to be in his own mind to me. Too scared in the pocket. Can't throw the ball forward. Things like that have nothing to do with scheme.
White for the most part looked good (yeah I said it. Suck it GC.

Remind me how many games we won with a "good" pocket passer again?
Isn't hard to look good when the guy you replace throws the ball backwards with no pressure

and we've never tried with actually talented WRs. I think it's worth at least trying with Kyle Davis, Stove, Slayton and NCM. That's a lot of legit firepower out there....and not just converted QBs playing WR.
also, we've never had a defense that could hold up their end of the bargain. I think we MAY have that now.

I think it's definitely worth a shot with Franklin being our other option.

Okay, okay, I may be stirring the kool aid again...keep going. I hope I have never been more wrong in my life but watching the 2013 SEC ship game was a thing of beauty...and that was with little to no defensive help at all. Also, another thing that was very obvious in that game was great fullback play.

I FIFY. The biggest issue between 2013 and 2014 was the line play. shite saban teams aren't worth a hill of beans until he gets a dominant oline in.

I may be in the minority, but I genuinely feel that if Gus does what i think/hope he's doing and really do more sets with the WRs split out as wide as humanly possible that it will make the passing game MUCH easier for White (or whoever is the QB) and could make it much more difficult for defenses to surprise our OL with exotic blitzes from odd places.

We discussed this back in January and I unfortunately still believe that the data says Gus is not a great passing coach.

The data shows that Gus is not going to win a ton of awards as a passing-focused coach per info below that I pulled directly from recent AL.com article. And yes, because i'm an SEC homer and don't believe Tulsa or Arky St. are about sh&t...I left those years off.
What you'll see is that 4 out the 7 years that Gus has been in the SEC, his offenses were not in the top 100 in the country in passing. His best passing team ever was Chris Todd year at #56.
The Gus system only really works with a legit dual-threat QB.

What good pocket passers has he had at Auburn? He's had two elite dual threats, it would work with a very good passer.
