Just lost my dad a couple weeks ago. He had a good run but he was riddled with Alzheimer’s.
Sorry to hear about that. Similar to when I lost my Pops. He has a different form of dementia similar to those that took the football hits and also had Bone Cancer at the same time. Hard to see him go through that. I helped take care of him at a point and was lucky enough to be there when he died.

I am traveling in July to see my son in NOLA. We plan on going up through parts of MS on the way back as we swing over to see some family in Alabama.
Any good recommendations on seeing some civil war sites? or other interests in history that is worth going to see? MS is where I really haven't seen but as a kid & young adult went through many of the ones in VA, PA, GA & TN but haven't seen much of MS

Very similar. Honestly what a blessing to be there in the end as well. It was hard but I wouldn’t take anything for the experience.

Vicksburg, of course, is the biggest Civil War site in the state. Also, if you get into far north MS you can hit Corinth. It is a much smaller interpretive center and is actually part of the Shiloh National Battlefield. If you haven't been to Shiloh you owe it to yourself to go.
Brices Cross Roads is between Tupelo and Corinth.

This was the late 90s in central Florida but a neighbor leasing land out by cane fields had a bunch of emus. Hilarious birds but dumb as a rock and I'd imagine a pain to look after.
They’re also bipolar.
Some days they’ll be completely chill and friendly other days they try and bite you and mess with you.

When I lived in Georgia in the mid-late 90’s, there was a guy that lived out on some land about a 200-300 yards off of our subdivision that had llamas. Before we found this out, we’d be sitting outside on the deck or out front hanging with neighbors at night and would hear these creepy scary screams in the distance. Was like something out of a horror movie. So strange. It was those llamas.

My neighborhood roads are bout flooded. Over a foot of rain in May
As typical, where it’s raining, it’s flooded people out. My boys in north Georgia have similar stories. I’m not looking for monsoons, just a couple days a month would be good. I am good with the hot dry weather but everything needs a drink.
I assume you are in mid to north Alabama?

Fun fact about Vicksburg...the city fell to Grant on July 4, 1863. The Federal troops celebrated by raising a large United States flag over the court house.
After that, Independence Day was not officially celebrated in Vicksburg again until 1945, but even then the celebration was called the Carnival of the Confederacy. It wasn't until 1976 that it was again officially recognized as Independence Day.

I’ve been to dozens of civil war battlefield sites and Shiloh is one of the best to visit

My best friend tells a story of his father-in-law* who was a park ranger at Vicksburg.
He's visiting a battle field with red clay banks and Tom is telling him how they're full of lead mini balls. So as they're checking them out my bud reached forward and Tom quipped go ahead and get you one and I'll not worry about you being with my daughter tonight.
Said they got along great after learning to speak the same language.

My dad grew up in what is now "in town" Atlanta in the late 30s and 40s. Their property was very near part of the Battle of Atlanta battlefield (the vantage point for the Atlanta Cyclorama was within a few blocks.
He and his sisters said that after a hard rain they could walk out in the yard and find minee balls that had surfaced. My aunt actually found what they believe was a medal from the Mexican War that an officer lost either during an encampment o while moving toward the front lines.
