Feel like we've started off before slow defensively and found our way in previous seasons. This team just isn't so far on that side.

I could get by some of our current guards off the dribble even at my age. Denver, CBM, KD, Zep? No way. Hell, even Miles Kelley with his length.

Overton gets lost in the wash constantly and struggles to keep his man in front of him. Magwood isn’t a natural defender and is lost. Tahaad is quick but struggles, gets bullied a lot. Steven said our best in ball defender is a walk on lol. You have to recruit defense talent and size guys. Effort is only a part of it.

Effort is what made those guys you listed good defenders. Tahaad and Overton are more athletic than Bryce Brown and Zep Jasper. What made those two elite defenders is that they wanted to defend. That's effort.

There were at least some hints that this team might gel. Hey, we got some successful ally-oops which didn't exist before.

Yes and no. A lot of defense is instinctive. Jovic tries twice as hard as Broome ever did but Broome had incredible instincts and awareness. He dropped off a little his senior year because of the offensive load but his sophomore and junior years he was a top notch defender.

Marshalltiger with the truth… frankly, Bruce should not have put us in this situation..

Jovic does play with a lot of effort so point taken but Broome also has a bit of length on Jovic that makes a lot of difference. Being left handed and possessing impeccable timing for blocking shots didn't hurt either

While we are bitching let's iust bring one more thing up. Despite the shot going in Murphy proved he shouldn't have been the one shooting that shot. He had 0.6 to release the ball and only needs 0.3 to release. He isn't trained at that shot.

We went to him twice when the game was on the line- less than ten seconds remaining on the clock. If it wasnt for Hall grabbing offensive rebounds on Murphy's miss we would have already lost. Whoever is drawing up clutch plays needs to be finding Hall up and down.

This is Bruce’s roster for sure. Steven will make first year coaching mistakes. He may should have left and went to a small program but how could you leave when we had championship type teams.

Maybe we get some breaks that go our way but bubble team is the ceiling for this team.

Steven helped recruit all these dudes though. Supposedl Murphy was our number two option after missing on Yaxel. Supposedly we did not realize Jovic was so short. It is not like Steven is just walking into a room of brand new players that his former coach signed. Steven was in charge of portal recruiting. Yall are clinging to this "not his roster" stuff like he was not prepared to go into this season as the assistant HC.

And blindly assuming the roster will be better next season. Good bigs and guards aren't going to be lining up to play for SP.

Yep, and if there's no NIL $ to buy the talent, we're sliding back down the SEC.

Bruce had difficulty with NIL $, I'd imagine if Bruce had trouble raising $ for AU basketball to be competitive recruiting, Steven has no chance.

If the "big" NIL dollars aren't there for bball (which by all accounts they aren't), it's going to be a losing battle for most any coach. Sure you'll get some seasons where the pieces fall into the right places but year in and year out consistency will become increasingly difficult unless your name is Duke, U Conn, Mich St, Kansas, NC but even then there are no guarantees.

I want to complain about donors not stepping up for bball considering the success we've had but who am I to tell millionaires where to spend their money. It is what it is, but in the NIL era, thrifty recruiting won't get you to many final 4's.

I'm not ready to throw SP to curb considering the circumstances around this off season and the roster but I need to see him keep this squad focused and not "give up". And I feel like that might be tougher than ever with players that have no real ties to AU or this staff other than they are being paid to play here.

Bottom line for me, NIL has sucked the joy out of college athletics.

Penny pinching now while we’re at our pinnacle is going to cost us even more later on down the line. Unless we decide to just take the dive like we did in swimming. I get the need for football money but the way we spent this year is a slap in the face to big boy basketball.

He doesn’t have the gravitas to coach them hard. He knows his players know how he got the job and it makes it difficult to really get after their arse in an authentic way.

JGT released Steven is paid 3 million per year including a ton of incentive pay if he can get there.

Steven's contract is among the lowest in the SEC.

Just want to say we should stop overreacting to SP's first year with a rebuilding roster. I for one am still pretty optimistic even though A&M and UGA were incredibly disappointing.

Two top 15 wins against HOF coaches is nothing to scoff at. We easily could have won vs. Houston, A&M, and UGA and if we'd pulled those off, what would the people in this thread be saying?
