Press conference underway. Will update this post when interesting stuff comes out

- Tim Horton is now the new recruiting coordinator. Larry Porter now in charge of special teams
- Marcus Woodson will coach corners, Greg Brown safeties
- Stidham no longer in sling. Will not throw until after spring break tho
- Tough news for Daquan Newkirk. Tore his achilles yesterday, out for the spring. Expected back in fall
- Ryan Davis had shoulder surgery & will wear non contact jersey until spring break
- So this is interesting. Noah Igbinoghene will get work at both WR & CB this spring. Starting with defense today
- Gus hoping to have a 2 deep set at end of spring
- Running backs will be tackled more this spring than ever before as they hunt for new starter
- Confirms early enrollee Josh Marsh will miss spring with injury
- Says running back battle very wide open. Specifically mentions that pass protection will play a big role (RIP Kam Martin)
- Jordyn Peters will start out at nickel this spring, Jeremiah Dinson at safety (not surprised, I think Dinson is a good replacement for Roberts & Peters was solid at nickel at end of season)
- Iggy could get snaps on both sides of ball if excels at CB this spring
- Not as much mixing & matching OL this year
- Horton will start out at guard tho could get look at center
- Lindsey has a short list of new Wildcat QBs. Gus doesn't say who
- Ashley/Troxell will work at RT. Brahms/Kim at center
- Ian Shannon moving back to K this spring, Will Hastings & Griffin King working at holder
- Paul James has left the program

Looks like PC is over

Umm, unless they are talking about short yardage it should be Malik.. why sacrifice the throwing option except the fact they will prob never throw? Keeping defenses off balance isn't really Gus' strong point

Malik Willis (Sophomore)
Joey Gatewood (Freshman)

These two do not need to wear the no-contact jersey and need to go live this Spring.

Would need to put the no-contact jersey on the defenders that don’t want to be run over by the inevitable Heisman, Gatewood.

Auburn football spring practice observations: Early look at 2-deep on Day 1 (SECCountry)
quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn football unofficially opened the 2018 season Thursday afternoon with the start of spring practices, and Gus Malzahn gave an early look at the 2-deep depth chart he wants settled by the end of camp.

With starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham limited during his recovery from shoulder surgery, Malik Willis and Joey Gatewood got their chances to run the first two offenses in Auburn’s popular pace drill.

On defense, Auburn coordinator Kevin Steele lined up his unit, which returned a lot of familiar faces on the first team and a lot of newcomers in the second-team backfield.

Stay right here for practice notes and observations Thursday evening. For now, here are the early first- and second-string offenses and defenses.

Offense observations

- Jarrett Stidham mostly stood behind Malik Willis and Joey Gatewood during pace and throwing drills. Malzahn said he thought that perspective may help him as he recovers from offseason surgery on his non-throwing shoulder.

- It’s worth noting that the first-team offense featured Kam Martin in the pace drill, but when it came back out Asa Martin took the field. Devan Barrett was with the second team, while the brief third-team run was made up of walk-ons.

- Eli Stove lined up as a slot receiver on the second team, while Nate Craig-Myers and Darius Slayton were on the outside with the first team. Interesting move, but it would be one that could get Craig-Myers and Slayton on the field at the same time in a three-wide set.

- New-old offensive line coach J.B. Grimes did a lot of hands-on teaching with the young players during individual drills. Here’s a good look at his style:

- Mike Horton wasn’t with the first-team offensive linemen during individual drills because he was working inside with the punt protection team. Horton looks he’ll settle at right guard, but there’s a chance he could play some center this spring.
Walk-on offensive lineman Trent Kelley was in a non-contact jersey.

Defense observations

- Wow, that’s a young second-team secondary — three freshmen, one player new to the position in Noah Igbinoghene and a walk-on. Igbinoghene will have a good chance to crack the two-deep at cornerback this season, though, and the Tigers have talked about playing him on both sides. Look for a story on that Friday.

- As expected, Jordyn Peters lined up at nickel back with Jeremiah Dinson bumped back to safety. That move will give Auburn some more experience at a thin safety spot while putting Peters at arguably the position that best fits his abilities.

- Over on the defensive line, Rodney Garner was focusing on pad level and explosion during early drills. T.D. Moultry showed a lot of pop in his work, and Nick Coe was impressive.

- Daquan Newkirk was on a one-legged scooter during practice after tearing his Achilles on Wednesday. He’ll miss all of spring camp and undergo surgery Friday. The JUCO defensive tackle is expected to be back for fall camp in August.

- Greg Brown is in charge of safeties now, while new assistant Marcus Woodson takes over the cornerbacks. Both were energetic and vocal during the viewing window.

- Freshman linebacker Josh Marsh (right knee) and walk-on linebacker Barrett Tindall (left leg) were on crutches. Marsh will miss all of camp with a knee injury he suffered last month.

All the rest…

- This was the first day of practice with tight end and H-backs coach Larry Porter taking over as special teams coordinator. He swapped roles with running backs coach Tim Horton, who is the recruiting coordinator again. Auburn, as usual during open viewing windows, did a lot of special teams work.

- Walk-on specialist Beau Horn was working at holder while Auburn’s receivers did individual work inside. Will Hastings and Griffin King will compete for that job. Ian Shannon worked exclusively at kicker, while Aidan Marshall punted. Australian punter Arryn Siposs arrives this summer.

- Class of 2019 recruit Cordale Flott, a defensive back from Saraland, Ala., was in attendance on a visit. Former Auburn assistant and current Hamilton TigerCats (CFL) assistant Phillip Lolley was on the list to visit practice Thursday, along with Central-Phenix City (Ala.) High School coach Jamey Dubose.
