Rewatched the game... so you don't have to.

Though I'd encourage you to as well. My high level takeaways... if we can clean up fumbles/mental errors, and get PT to settle down and hit some intermediate throws, we're going to have a solid team. I'd like to see us come out and throw 70% of the time in the first half against Samford. Get a QB game reps throwing the ball. Cal was showing almost zero respect for the deep ball at points.
More detailed breakdown:
(1) What stalled the offense:
Penalties
Fumbles
Poor throws
Poor adjustments by WRs
(2) The OLine actually looked good. Passing - Cal wasn't getting quick pressure on the QB until the 4th quarter then two plays in a row they were almost untouched. Running lanes were good. Cal safeties were crashing the box. Teams are going to dare us to throw the ball going forward
(3) Payton Thorne was missing throws... missed multiple short/intermediate comeback routes... we never really took deep shots. Also making some bizarre reads... throwing a seam/post into safety help which is probably the worst option in the play? Looks off a wide open Hooks on a first down? His read progression seems poor
(4) Robby Ashford - he's going to have to throw a couple of passes at some point if we want to keep using him like this. Cal put 9 in the box against Ashford. That or just don't use this package
(5) Fairweather is a BEAST. Best in-air adjustments on the team

One of the most underrated receivers in tSEC

Sounds exactly like what coach freeze said in his Monday presser.

He is underrated because he only has 2 or 3 targets so far. We dont really try to feed him.

He would have to be making reads for it to be poor

At this point I’m not sure he is.

So put Holden out there and tell him to target either him or hooks...whichever is open. Should be able to move it down the field.

Did Hooks play last game? I don't remember him out there.

Just saw on Auburn Twitter that Kaufman graded out with the best game of any CB in college football (per Pro Football Focus).

Yeah, I believe he was the receiver who tipped the high pass for an interception.

Yes he did. Was targeted at least once that I saw but I don't think he had any catches.

247 has an article that has all their snaps and a few other things of interest. Hooks had the most snaps of all our wrs at 36 and had zero targets

I thought hooks was the receiver that let the high pass go through his hands for an interception?

Idk. According to their stats he wasn't thrown to

Truth be known, that pass wasn’t targeted to anyone on the field. Probably headed toward the Cal mascot

Also making some bizarre reads
I saw several times during the game after a play where Thorne was making hand motions and yelling at WRs to either take the route deep or cut it off (that's what I gathered from the few instances I saw anyways). It seemed obvious that QB and WR still aren't on the same page with some of these reads/option routes. One adjustment may be to just go with what is shown presnap for a while. That way there is less opportunity for something catastrophic happening after the snap. Ie a WR taking his route deep and Thorne throwing a hitch that gets ran back for 6. Just make it where if they're reading man, run the deep route. Zone coverage gets a slant or stop route.
Not sure why they seem to be having such a hard time. But if the QB is never reading the same thing as the WR, it's just not going to work.

I tried to re-watch it, but it wasn't worth it. The first game was so error free, but the Cal game was cluster of screw-ups.

Has anyone posted this Cal fan’s melt video yet?
I just saw it

I guess he missed out on when the Cal student section was calling us sister-frickers
