Remember the past (celebrate the now)

I remember talking with Cliff Ellis on the concourse. We had made the NIT and he was handing out tickets to the game (Miami I think). He was doing his best to drum up student support. I chatted with him about Auburn and his time at USA. Even though I had only been to a handful of games at beard eaves I grabbed all my friends and went to that game. We won but lost the next one I think. But it was fun as shite. And it was NOTHING compared to now. Long story short……let’s appreciate the frick out of this. This is an incredible run.
WAR DAMN EAGLE!!!

To this day one of the worst decisions Auburn athletics has ever made was cutting Cliff loose.

We entered into a period of darkness for sure. But Bruce has made the wait worth it.

Didn’t we lose at Purdue in the next game?
Cliff was honored at half time of the Saturday game as part of the SEC Legends… was good to see him out there.

Just googled and you’re right. We had some flashes with marquis Daniels and Adam Harrington. We were too busy beating Alabama in football to worry about basketball.

As someone that was a student during the Barbee years, and attended nearly every home game as a student, it’s genuinely hard to put into words how much fun it is watching the teams we’ve had under Bruce. As much as I’ll sometimes gripe about certain things he’ll do during games, the truth is he has done more for the university and the athletic department than probably anyone else in my lifetime. To take such a floundering, bottom-of-the-barrel program like we were in 2013, and turn it into what it is today is nothing short of miraculous. He could leave Auburn this April (God forbid), and he would still go down as a legend for what he has already accomplished. It’s beautiful to watch, and I’m grateful to be here to see it.

I recall being a student and going to beard eaves. Had some fun times with Lebo I think. But not much
This is legendary type basketball we are getting to witness.
Bruce has rebuilt a program from the ground up. It will never be the same.

I was at Auburn during the Tommy Joe Eagles era. I think we were the worst team in the SEC every year.

Life lesson for all of us. Not just with AU round ball. Great message and I cant stress to the younger people here not to wait for things to happen.
Your message is so true. Now let's hope for a deep deep run. To the end.

RIP
He may not have been the best basketball coach, but he was a heck of a great guy! I had the fortunate opportunity to have a few encounters with him at a basketball camp I attended in 1989
Believe It or not Sonny Smith was at that camp as well - as a young Auburn fan living in Baton Rouge I was over the moon that these two gentlemen were at a camp in LSU County!

Yeah, Coach Eagles was a great guy. Not the best coach.
When we hired him we missed out because there were rumors Mac McCarthy wanted the job. He did an outstanding job at Chattanooga and had been an assistant under Sonny.

Been a fan since the Barn days...
Bill Lynn -- nice guy, but bball was an afterthought and he couldn't match Joel Eaves success. He did have Mengelt and Henry Harris.
Bob Davis -- brought some excitement and upgraded the talent tremendously. Didn't do much with two future NBA All Stars on the court at the same time, along with two other future NBA players.
Paul Lambert -- never coached a game. Died in a hotel fire.
Sonny Smith -- everybody loves Sonny. Got us to the NCAAT for the first few times. Barkley, Chuck, Chris, Wesley...lots of good players, fun, and jokes. Couldn't quite sustain the success.
Tommy Joe Eagles -- good resume, good guy, mediocre results.
Cliff Ellis -- Likeable, brought some enthusiasm to the program after the depressing TJE years. Had two great teams, some so-so teams, and some very mediocre teams.
Jeff Lebo -- good resume and pedigree. Could coach, but had a hard time recruiting and keeping players. Had one good year, with Quantez, but that's it.
Tony Barbee -- good resume. Momma said if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. That's all I can say about the Barbee error.
Bruce. The GOAT.

Always thought Lebo had some coaching chops but yeah.. major roster troubles. Similar to Kermit at Ole Miss or Mike White.

not long afterwards another local motel actually displayed a sign out front that said "NO ONE HAS EVER DIED IN ONE OF OUR ROOMS".
weird coincidence, a little over a year later, LSU football hired Bo Rein from NC State, he went on a recruiting trip in a Cessna and apparently the cabin lost pressure and eventually crashed, killing him and the pilot - another SEC big 3 sport HC who died before ever coaching a single game

Would have been a stretch. A good record but a weak RPI in a weak conference.
