What if Auburn University purchased a prominent billboard in Times Square and used it to advertise for the university and our athletics? Millions of people would see it.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it costs between 1.1 and 4 million dollars per year to advertise in TS.

Perhaps when recruits commit to Auburn, we flash their image up on the billboard for an hour or so.

edit: I understand that 1) it's not that easy to get advertising space in TS. 2) I'm not sure if a school is allowed to acknowledge that a recruit committed to a school until signing day, so perhaps it has to wait until NSD.

I think that’s illegal

How much do you expect to gain from advertising in Times Square?

Recruits aren’t spending time there. Tourists aren’t looking for their college choice there. Seems like a total waste of money.

1) Completely illegal
2) what good does it do? How often are you convinced by a billboard for even a minor decision? Now think about how many kids are going to decide to go to Auburn based on a billboard.

I like the imagination but I rather spend the 1 million on a better recruiter

What exactly do you hope to gain by doing this though?

As in, what do you think this accomplishes exactly, so I can explain specifically why it is a waste of money

Hard to imagine it moves the needle in recruiting. If it did, it would be short lived as other schools start copying it

As for general out of state student recruiting / brand awareness, it would be a significantly better investment to hire traveling college recruiters to visit HS in states with high in state tuition + high income areas

It exposes Auburn to one of the most visited sites in the world...the only school to do such a thing. Its all about exposure, which means more people simply begin to hear about and know Auburn (and it sticks in their head...'oh, Auburn, that's the school with the billboard in TS). Its the same exact reason why just about every other billboard in times square exists.

Nobody makes decisions based of billboards. Billboards are about creating a quick memory that's sticks in someone's head. The point wouldnt be for the billboard to entice people to go to Auburn right then and there, but instead to put the school's name in his/her head.

Billboard advertisements are designed to catch a person's attention and create a memorable impression very quickly, leaving the reader thinking about the advertisement after they have passed it.

Our recruiting targets already have thought about Auburn though. We specifically reach out to them to convince them to come to Auburn. How is a billboard going to effect their decision?

Alabama, Georgia, Auburn are all recruiting me. But I saw an Auburn billboard so I’ll go there. That’s ridiculous. We’re already sitting there giving them a hard sell, the billboard won’t even come into play. Never mind the fact that many of our targets won’t even go to New York before they decide on a school.

You’re going with the wide net strategy of marketing when we’re targeting 25 specific guys a year. You’d have a lot better luck with a targeted online campaign rather than Times Square although I don’t think any general advertisement is going to effect sports recruiting at all. Recruiting is very personalized advertising already.

Aside from recruiting, what about general brand awareness for the school?

It's not the billboard itself that will affect their decision. You don't decide to buy a Coke when you see the Coca-Cola billboard, but you know it's an option when it comes time to have a drink. It's simply about putting the school's name out there for athletes or students to know it's an option. Its not about those 25 guys seeing it. Its about a 6th or 7th grader seeing it who then goes on to become a highly touted recruit. This would also taget markets Auburn traditionally doesn't do well drawing from.

The kids we recruit are from low-income areas of the deep south. I don't assume that many of their families are visiting Times Square very often. Great idea if you want to attract Chinese tourists to Auburn perhaps.

The best recruiting Auburn can do is to get competent coaches and win big games. Recruiting is a catch 22, you gotta look good to get the best recruits. Just look at our recent record at putting players in the NFL. If you are a recruit would you rather take your shot at Bama, where guys are drafted left and right or Auburn where we aren't keeping pace? Auburn is a national brand, when I wear my gear around the country people want to talk about Auburn and the Iron Bowl. They count on us to beat Bama.

Time Square holds no intrigue for me. Can't imagine it does for most of our recruits. Once was offered double my salary to move to NY/CT and made the right decision in taking a pass. Let's do the same with this idea.

Are we talking about football recruitment or general student recruitment?

Not many football recruits are hanging out in times square

Hell, not many HS students in general would see that billboard
