OSU and UTk are not as close in talent as many might think. OSU has 69 blue chips to Tenn's 41, and UTk's QB is just not all that good. OSU looks a step faster across the board, that's those blue chippers for you. I thought Tenn would give them a better fight, but I predicted an OSU win from the roster analysis.
I think two big intangibles lined up to make what should have been a pure talent competitive win into a blowout - UTk's fanbase PO'd an already PO'd OSU team (they're still butthurt over the Michigan flag thing, UTk made themselves into a proxy for UM with their stadium takeover attempt) and if you are not accustomed to that level of cold, you don't just step off the plane and play lights out in it. Yeah, it gets that cold in the South, but we seldom ever play games in it.

Home field advantage plays a big factor in the playoffs. Every home team won in the first round and by a comfortable margin

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't the deadline only apply for entering your name into portal? I think they can commit/decide at any time once they are in.
