Sorry for the OT post. I realizeeveryone’s situation is different and my decision is made already. Just curious of some opinions on the board.

I have been offered a job that is back in Auburn. It’s always been a dream of mine and my wife’s to be there. We currently live in Louisiana and all family is back in Alabama. The job would be a step back and does come with a pay cut. Just curious would you take a pay cut to move back to Auburn? If so how big of a haircut would you sign up for?

If I was close to retirement age, I would think about it, but other than that, I wouldn't do it. I'm a career man and that's what I'm focusing on now. My family is happy outside of AU and that's all I need.

The job would have to have a better potential for upward mobility in my opinion, unless you’re just content with that pay range.

Yeah upward mobility is important to me as well. I see the opportunity with the future company. It’s just a step back today.

Housing has started to get pretty expensive in Auburn. Depending where you live in LA, combining a pay cut + cost of living increase may be something to think about

What are your reasons for wanting to live in Auburn? How old are you?

35 - biggest reasons is our family is 6+ Hours away. Schools are much better vs BR. This bring almost everyone within an hour.

Not such a cut that we couldn’t live but definitely a step back in housing.

I used to live in BR. If you can send your kids to public schools in Auburn versus sending them to private schools in BR maybe it won’t be a pay cut unless they are going to public schools in BR, in which case I am sorry for you.

All of this. Auburn housing right now is insane.

Is a nicer house more important than being close to your family, sending your kids to better schools, and being in AU vs. anywhere in LA?

Since you stated you could still live comfortably, if not as lavishly, I'd move without a second thought.

Housing most places is insane right now. Birmingham areas are crazy high.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your idea of what a "stepback" looks like price wise?

All of this boils down to “how much” of a pay cut and “how much” loss/gain of upward mobility.

If it’s a dead end job in Auburn and you are only 35 - don’t do it.

Quality of life should be the focus. If the decrease in pay doesn’t impact your life quality then go for it. Where you want to live should always be priority #1

Buy a house in Opelika and balance out the pay cut. It's much more family focused anyway.

If you aren't around central campus, AU is very family focused. AU schools are better than Opelika too right?

Could save $ on a house and send the kid you like best to LeeScott

It's your world man. Keep captaining your ship and dock where you feel is right for you and your family. Just make sure there's treasure at the end of the voyage to sustain yourselves.

Move to Auburn, you will never regret it. There are houses for every price range. Richland Road is good for young families and priced well. Plenty of houses in Miores Mill area. Inventory is low now, but you can make it happen. Your quality of life for you and your family would be off the charts.

Its your life and I am not going to try and convince you and I have never lived in Auburn but I have lived in a small town before and do now

Nestalgic things like "coming home" usually are kind of pipe dreams. They always sound so fantastic and usually are for a very short time. They you realize things there are probably very similar to what they are every where. Same issues, food, etc.
