Got say 100 acres of land that was cut for timber 20 years ago. Wasn’t replanted. Plan right now is clearcutting what’s grown up since and properly replanting pine.

Anyone have advice for, instead of planting timber as a 20-year bank account, possibly trying to make a living off of it? Still in the early stages of thinking this through, but we’ve got tractors, barn, etc. Looks like hay wouldn’t be a terrible gig to look into but I just have no idea where to even start

ETA: posting here bc ag school

We got an Aubbie on the outboard that is a farmer (AUjim?). NoColors is into timber, too

ETA

Highcotton is the Aubbie on the outdoor board. I think AUjim is one of our trolls.

Are you just wanting to prep it to rent it out to a farmer or are you actually wanting to grow crops on it yourself?

Go to the outdoor board. There are many posters with ag backgrounds that post a lot on there.

We have 2 plots of land in Florida. One is around 250 acres that's almost all timber. The other is 50 that we rent o a farmer and cattle rancher. At one time we looked intofarming some of itourselves, but farming crops is not for a novice and even if you do everything right, mother nature is ultimately in control. Timber is a good long term plan and more profitable while renting provides steady riskfree income. Seems like you have enough land to do both. Once your timber matures for a few years, you can rent out the hunting rights if you want income prior to cutting

My uncles are corn farmers in Iowa if that helps. Not sure how it would, but just throwing that out there.

I've always been told that farming is a great way to turn a lot of money into a little bit of money.

This isn’t directed at the OP but people don’t understand how much money goes into farming just 100 acres let alone 2K-3K acre operation.

Leasing the land out for farming is the way to go. You can get $25 to $75 per acre. No risk cash flow

You can get a whole hell of a lot more if it is irrigated. Irrigated farmland is S Ga ranges from $250-$400/acre depending on where it’s at. If you can get 3 phase electricity to the field then you’ve got a down hill battle from there.

That’s what all those wealthy farmers keep saying.

By the way sandman. I was just on one of Ted Turner’s ranch’s today. Vermejo Park. It’s just under 600,000 acres and covers two states.

I guess what I’m saying is send me an email with your questions because I can help. I also slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night. All true.

Just the areas we were in were incredible.

I did learn they have tours and activities open to the public. It doesn’t look cheap, but definitely doable. It would be a blast to helicopter that ranch and then follow up with horseback, hiking, and/or ATV exploration.

I will work on posting some photos.

Where is that? Our house is close to Ralph Lauren's Ranch. That's "only" 17,000 acres and it seems endless.

I read up on his properties thinking I was gonna do a fly fishing trip. It was insanity regarding price.
