War Eagle everyone..

I'll preface the quiz question to say I enjoy pretty much all of Kaiju's posts and he or she seems to be a decent person. War Eagle.

And,actually, I rarely, but occasionally look at other teams' boards. I really enjoy spending time on here and still really enjoy getting to know AU folks spread around the world. A War Eagle to you all.

That said.....here is the Godzilla trivia quiz question: DADUM!

Question: Sorry, hang with me - I wasn't sure how to phrase it, so I thought I would keep it as wide open as possible for creative ideas, and don't wiki or Google if you don't know (or please don't post what you find).

Sorry, finally, here is the trivia question:

"Godzilla" was the English translation of his (?) original Japanese name "Gojira."

"Gojira" is a combination of the names of two different wild animals. One of those animals is the gorilla. Very strong and powerful. Intelligent, etc.

So what animal does the "jira" come from originally in Japanese? FTR, "jira" is only part of the animal's name in Japanese, just as "Go" is only part of the animal's name in English. I hope this makes sense.

Basically, Godzilla's name comes from the combination of gorilla and....what other animal?

PS - I am not a big fan of Godzilla now, but always watched Godzilla movies whenever they were on TV in the '70s in Auburn. I just recently found out the origin of his name.

PS2 - What is "Southern Hospitality?" in 6 words

I liked the article and thought it was worth a read.

Hmmm?
I happen to know this answer, but I have other questions…

Like why are you posting in the middle of the night? ( Oh wait, didn’t you say you were in Japan? )

Gojira is a combination of two words gorira (gorilla) and kujira (whale).

Godzilla is an aquatic animal, but can also walk on land. So the whale part makes some sense, as he's big and all, but he's not very ape like, not that I can tell.

It should be noted that there are other origin stories for the name.

Did you know how Gojira (Godzilla in Japanese) was named? According to Eiji Tsuburaya, the creator of Godzilla: "At the time, there was a tough- looking guy working on the Toho lot. His nickname was 'Gojira'. We just adopted it for our monster. It caught on and certainly has immortalized him!"

I am a bit of a Godzilla nerd.

That's great. All kinds of nerds here. I am a bit of a Japanese history nerd (1600 to present).

If anyone has any questions about or wants to discuss anything Japan-related, please ask. And yes, Asian twat does run vertically....JIC. That one is out of the way. War Eagle!
