Also, he hasn't done any college coaching since the 1980s and hasn't coached at all in 5 years.

And? He's obsessed with the game and has coached in the background the whole time. The games not that different and it gets closer to pro football every year.

I think people forget why Gruden "resigned". How do you think that would go over in recruiting?

so someone making the argument they’d prefer to go another route that doesn’t involve the offensive system that has clearly been a part of our animal play for many years now, is not an unreasonable position.

I didn't realize Harsin ran that "system". My bad.

I do know we won a Natty, and played for another, the only two chances I have seen in my sixty years, with a "scheme" you don't want any part of.

Substitution advantage is gone. There's a reason why Freeze and Malzahn haven't registered on anyone's offensive radars since then. It was a gimmick and the gimmick is over.

Im not really sure who is my favorite after the Kiffen's and proven coaches. I like Schumann the more time passes by. Really want a defensive guy who can recruit and toughen the team up. I want someone who is smart enough to know that there are others as smart so we are not hitching the next 3 years and our roster to one guys playbook. Making good position coach hires will be the difference

Auburn should bring in Tim Polasek and Dan Larson from North Dakota State. They are both younger coaches and seem to know how to win football games. Take a gamble on some coaches that can motivate and develop players that aren't connected to Auburn or any booster in any way shape fashion. New outside blood with free reign to do what they need to win games. Maybe they would be onboard with keeping DJ Durkin as defensive coordinator. Probably wouldn't break the bank either

This suggestion has sort a harsin vibe to it.

It’s doubtful he would leave Tech.

Cool straw man.

I find it pretty unbelievable at this point that even though we’ve pretty universally complained about this offensive scheme’s issues for the better part of a decade, it is somehow beyond reproach to bring up during a coaching search

You really wanna turn this into a measuring contest of sin? Bc Hugh wins no contest. Gruden may be an a-hole behind the scenes but that shite rarely means anything.

And a guy that can fricking coach on gameday. Not a guy that has to run up a big lead in the first half bc he's inevitably gonna get outcoached in the second half. And I think we'd be confident we have that in Schumann. His knock seems to be development but you can remedy that by keeping Durkin and getting a DB coach.

It's not about the biggest sin. It's about the real world consequences of having a racist HC. Which of the two do you think black recruits and their families would object to more: a guy calling prostitutes on a phone or the guy that uses the N-word?

A guy making teenage girls change in front of him probably

Frankly, people dont give as much of a shite about this as you think they do.

I don’t want gruden and I don’t think anyone should or really does but where did he say the “n word?”

LINK

And I would say hiring prostitutes behind your wife’s back is worse than saying words, regardless of what words they are, is a worse moral failing.

I don’t even really think he said anything all that bad.

Someone please explain the Jon Gruden hype to me.

The guy got famous in 2000-2002 when he took over a good and already winning Tampa Bay team and won the Super Bowl in year 1 on the job, but then followed that up with 7-9 and 5-11. They made the playoffs just 2 times out of 6 years post-Super Bowl.

Then, he takes a 10-year gap before coaching again and puts up a 22-31 record in Oakland.

The guy has basically never coached in college (two seasons at two no-name schools in the late 1980's mean frick-all). There is zero track record to suggest that he would work as a coach for 18-21 year olds.

This guy has somehow conned everyone into turning him into some weird coaching celebrity for some unexplained reason. So much so that every college's idiot fans seem to think that this guy who hasn't even been relevant at all in football for over 20 years is supposed to be a "game changer" hire SMH.

I enjoyed him breaking down film and doing MNF but that’s about it

Not like he ran some dynamic offense with Brad Johnson to win that SB

He had an all time defense with Warren Sapp etc

Did I miss the official announcement?

Has the word been given?

* I ask because all I’ve seen is “sources“ over and over again. Gotta admit the tee time cancellation was pretty epic.

Exactly. He was an offensive coach who inherited a team that won the Super Bowl with an elite defense.

If you think about how many coaches have coached in the NFL since ~2002; why the frick is Jon Gruden still being talked about?

Cohen made a statement. It's official. Durkin is interim.

quote:

Statement from Auburn Athletic Director John Cohen

“I have informed Coach Freeze of my decision to make a change in leadership with the Auburn Football program. Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster. Our expectations for Auburn Football are to annually compete for championships and the search for the next leader of Auburn Football begins immediately.”

Vibes and acumen. Good combo in college football. Somebody's gonna kick the tires one day and in a year like this year where you're starting at a pile of mid i think there's much worse experiments to run than the super bowl winning hard nosed cool guy with connections.
