Got to say. I really don't give a shite about this.

BS lawsuit. Hopefully Auburn will not give him any money. If you read this carefully, you see someone who only cares about himself. There is no merit to his lawsuit and suing because he got lower raises will not get him anything.

The high density of football players in that major didn’t go unnoticed by John Urschel of the Baltimore Ravens, who addressed the issue in his “Math Meets Football” blog. Urschel calculated the odds that this could have occurred randomly at roughly one in three undecillion.

In case you were wondering, that's 1 in 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

I'd be interested to see how he calculated this.

To illustrate how large a number this is, think of it this way: if you got a job that paid you $1 trillion an hour, and worked every hour of every day, it would take you 342,465,753,424,657,534,247 years to earn $3 undecillion.

So, yeah, I'm a little skeptical of his numbers.

Well, we can always hire Stern as head football coach.

I'm positive that he will ensure that he only recruits players that want to major in Finance, Aerospace Engineering, or Nuclear Physics.

Boy, what a team that would be!

Damn. Lol....Good illustration.

So...is he suggesting that a multimillion dollar athletic department would put pressure on a college to continue crip majors open so as to keep athletes eligible to play football??

Yeah it's a ridiculous number. If I remember my basic stats correctly, he likely calculated the odds of any given student choosing a major, then raised that number to the power of how ever many players had a specific major. This in no way factors in the difficulty of a major, or student probabilities towards a major, or any other important factors...it's just like a major is randomly assigned to a player.

So if Auburn offers 50 different majors, a random football player has 1 in 50 odds of being in that major. Say 20 players are majoring in PA. So raise (1/50) to the 20th power...you get a number close to undecillion.

I likely botched this...Jones can use his magic Asian math powers to correct all the issues here

I could be wrong, but I don't think that's the case. Due to when practices are held some majors just aren't available for football players because they can't attend the classes.

Stern is far from being a liberal. He just has legit gripes with the administration. The whole department has for years.

People need to understand the context of why Stern is/was complaining and what he wanted

Background
Auburn's economics program had at one time been one of our best programs and nationally respected before it got gutted over a BoT spat

Current Status

The once proud economics program literally got moved to the Haley Center basement for

The department got stripped of funding and found it extremely difficult to hire and then retain quality talent such as Dr Richter who left for Fed Reserve

The dept also doesn't get addtl funding from the business school to support lecture staff the business students who take econ classes for their major requirements

Stern Complaints

Stern gets stonewalled on funding for economics because of budget. Meanwhile, Public admin major, which still lives just for athletes, gets heavily funded from the University

Stern wouldn't have a problem is the $ for public admin came from the Athletic Department budget but it doesn't. It is money that should be going to economics but instead is finding athletes

Yes he does have a problem with that. In fact one of his complaints was that the AD wanted to give funds. The PA program and Provost boosinger wisely said No. he attacked football to get press.

When one individual has problems with multiple administrations you might want to understand that he was and is a large part of the problem. Feel free to downvote.

ETA: also the business school has thrived the last 20 years, he did not want to fall in line so they moved it to liberal arts. Why were funds stripped? Why would folks do that? In your scenario 100 people are wrong and he is right.

If I know one thing Auburn has some of the best legal counsel money can buy at that starts with Jon Waggoner. Still hate to see this negative pub.

LINK

Side note his wife was a professor of mine, sweet lady and very intelligent. She used to be easy on the eyes too, seems she aged kinda poorly.

Why do certain departments, as deserving as they MIGHT be, think that they deserve to set their own budget?

The state (and private donations) fund the University. The BoT and the University Administration run AND BUDGET the colleges, schools, and departments.

"It's just not fair! They HATE me!"

Well, that may be. But did the budget pass with a majority BoT vote? Did the Administration take any unusual steps in implementing the budget?

This is the BoT everybody wanted and everybody fought for over the years. Hooray! Huzzah!

The continual complainers to this day will never be happy and never will be until the liberal SJW's on the faculty are allowed to run the damn ship.

"They're mean! Revenge! Vendetta!"

OK, prove it. I bet you won't be able to.

But everyone who does this FOR SOME REASON always chooses to include some mud in their accusation for the athletic department, especially football. And many of you are still more than happy to pick up your own mud-balls and help them.

Stern definitely causes problems for himself/economics. He can/is difficult to work with and uncompromising

Just because Stern has his own problems though doesn't mean his arguments don't have merit

Economics should be housed in CLA, the problem is that funding is more plentiful in Harbert. This is just the latest petty move that has undercut our once proud ECON program

Also, Economics today has more demanding math foundation which the provost not approve. The "quantitative" track for undergrad is supposed to be the only option

This happens in private sector as well

Because the various Auburn University committees and BoT regularly prioritize athletics at the expense of academics

I have no shite sat on a campus building committee where there was a unanimous vote that got overruled by the 1 athletics official who needed further approval. It was absurd

Doubtful he is very involved on this. He is stretched too thin in his other roles to be the point for something like this

I'd imagine the new general counsel Jaime Hammer takes this
