IDK if anyone else here was an economics major, but I had a few classes from Michael Stern. He is former chair of the economics department.
Interesting stuff. If any of you know/knew Stern, you know he's a quirky dude but I don't doubt they retaliated against him. Personally I'm against these BS majors.

quote:
he summary opens with the fall 2007 semester and spring 2008 semester, when the complaint reads that, “The College of Business Administration sold out to the Koch Foundation and engaged in rigged hiring in exchange for money. Much of this was hidden from the majority of the Economics Department faculty, who found out about it from Auburn University President Jay Gogue in early 2008.”
quote:
Stern became the unanimously-elected chairman of the Economics Department in 2010. In 2013, according to the lawsuit, “the new provost, Dr. Timothy Boosinger, ran off (College of Liberal Arts) Dean Anna Gramberg and brought in Dr. Joseph Aistrup to keep the Public Administration major open at the behest of Auburn athletics.”
quote:
One of Stern’s colleagues said he noticed during the 2013 Iron Bowl that “almost all of the star players on the football team had Public Administration as a major.”
quote:
The high density of football players in that major didn’t go unnoticed by John Urschel of the Baltimore Ravens, who addressed the issue in his “Math Meets Football” blog. Urschel calculated the odds that this could have occurred randomly at roughly one in three undecillion.
quote:
Stern says he continued to have difficulties when dealing with the university, including receiving smaller raises than some other chairs, despite an “outstanding five-year review” and unanimous re-election from his faculty. “This, clearly, is an act of retaliation,” the lawsuit states.
quote:
During a March 2018 Faculty Senate meeting, new faculty athletics representative Beverly Marshall made a presentation regarding six-year graduation rates for male athletes, according to the complaint. Stern responded with his own presentation, highlighting the potential role the Public Administration scandal played in the data she presented. New Athletics Director Allen Greene, who came to Auburn in January following the retirement of former Athletics Director Jay Jacobs, was present at the meeting and “did not look happy,” the lawsuit claims. Ten days later, Stern says, he lost access to the administrative computer system. Aistrup told Stern that “he was being relieved of his duties as Chair, effective immediately.” He was also told to surrender his key – a master key for Miller Hall.
Interesting stuff. If any of you know/knew Stern, you know he's a quirky dude but I don't doubt they retaliated against him. Personally I'm against these BS majors.

hi
but no
I am an attorney though, I'd like to see the whole complaint if someone knows where I can find it.

Is this federal court? If so, don't you have access to PACER?

National championship confirmed

I know Mike fairly well. It does not surprise me at all that he’s doing this. He and a few others have been butting heads with the admin for years.

I just changed firms, I need to get this firm's pacer login
I don't handle federal court cases however, so I'm not familiar with actually using pacer. So far in my 3 years practicing I've only had cases in magistrate, state, and superior court

I did my MA in economics at Alabama. I didn’t interact with Stern much as an undergrad but I had a professional project ongoing with a professor at Alabama and it was just logistically easier for me to complete my degree there.

I think there is some legit stuff here that probably needs to be brought to light, but-
I don't doubt for one second that some children who came to Auburn to play football with almost no care in the world for their education other than staying eligible, found what they thought would be an easy major and decided to all do it together. Now...that major may have been unfairly made intentionally ridiculously easy for them, but the 1:3 undecillion thing, while may be technically accurate, just doesn't really take into account the whole story. The problem is that at 99% of football universities, student athletes are given the opportunity to gain an education and build good careers outside of football, but very, very few actually give a shite about what happens to them when _______ _________ is no longer covering slot receivers on Saturdays.

I could do it, but PACER charges like ten cents a page and I have a feeling the complaint is voluminous.

When it includes such dire issues like office furniture dinging walls.....yeah, i'd bet your're right.

For some reason, whenever the liberal faculty don't get EXACTLY what they demand, there's always some kind of worldwide conspiracy involved.
Eventually, the Illuminati, the Free Masons, and the Knights Templar will be mentioned.
And those chemtrails, man... wtf is up with those chemtrails?

Come on man...
Its pretty much textbook whistleblower treatment. The dude brought up a perceived problem and was shunned. His mistake, just like every other person who tries to argue anything today, is that he didn't stay on topic. He added in other stuff that he saw as connected, that almost positively wasn't, and now his credibility takes a hit.

Yeah I'm sure most, if not all, of his story is legit
but
I can't seem to care if we have a few "football degrees" given out to athletes who probably otherwise wouldn't be in college (as long as we're not Tom Peteeing/UNCing them)
it's not like we're over here handing out engineering degrees or anything, and for a lot of kids growing up in less-than-ideal situations, having a "worthless" degree and an Auburn letterman's jacket goes a long way for setting up a stable life.
I'm sure this will be taken cynically because I'm posting this on a football message board, so to an extent I've got a vested interest in the status quo, but I dunno, it's not like Auburn's out here needing to be Harvard or MIT. We're a dang state university.

You just looking for someone to aruge with this morning?
I regret even explaining this, but just to point out....I didn't argue that. I was pointing out that someone up there had accused the guy of going all conspiratorial because he was a whiny liberal who didn't get his way....

Stern is far from being a liberal. He just has legit gripes with the administration. The whole department has for years.
