Kerryon Johnson believes Auburn’s Boobee Whitlow ‘could be better than me.'

Back on Christmas Eve, Kerryon Johnson had some spare time on his hands and took to Instagram to field questions from his followers.

One of those pertained to one of Johnson’s replacements at Auburn, running back Boobee Whitlow. Johnson’s response was revealing.

“Could be better than me,” he posted.

quote:

Take a minute to let that sink in.

In 2017, when Johnson was at his peak for Auburn, he led the SEC in both rushing yards (1,391) and rushing yards per game (115.92) while leading the league in total touchdowns (20) and earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors. He went on to be the program’s highest-drafted running back (second round, 43rd overall) since Ronnie Brown (second overall) and Cadillac Williams (fifth overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft.

And he thinks Whitlow stands a chance to be even better.

quote:

“I most definitely didn’t see that,” Whitlow said of Johnson’s Instagram response. “But he better hope I don’t see that, because I’ll screenshot it.”

quote:

“He makes plays when plays need to be made,” Johnson said. “He’s never going to be the fastest, never going to be the biggest guy, but when plays need to be made he always seems to step up, so as long as he keeps doing that I think his future’s going to be really bright.”

Those words, of course, hold some weight with Whitlow, who looked up to Johnson during their one shared year together on the Plains in 2017 — when Johnson was a breakout star and Whitlow redshirted following an ankle injury in fall camp. Johnson took Whitlow under his wing, to an extent, to help the former three-star athlete adjust to the college game and hone his skills.

quote:

It’s the same courtesy that upperclassmen afforded Johnson when he first stepped foot on campus two years prior. Johnson wanted to pay it forward, and Whitlow didn’t let the experience go to waste. Watching Johnson in practices and games and being able to pick his mind for a year, helped teach Whitlow a more patient running style — or, at least, laid the groundwork for it.

quote:

“Watching him, how he’s like trusting the line, you feel me? Coming out of high school, I ain’t really too much have no line,” Whitlow said. “Not knocking my line; I love my line, but you know what I’m saying? I ain’t never too much — just like now I’m coming into a stage like this where I got three-, four-, five-star linemen that are my brothers that are here to protect me. Just watching him, how he trusts his line and has linemen on his side, that’s what I really kind of like learned. The way he took that leader role — I ain’t ever been the type that, like, likes to lead. That ain’t me. I ain’t ever been the type that likes to lead, but I got to take that step now. I got to step out that comfort zone, you feel me?”

That patience and inherent trust in his blockers was hard to come by for Whitlow, who was so accustomed to freelancing with the ball in his hands from his time at LaFayette. In high school, when things broke down, he could just outrun people to the edge and make something out of nothing. That wasn’t going to cut it in the SEC, and it’s something Gus Malzahn and then-offensive assistants Chip Lindsey and Tim Horton tried to communicate with him.

I would take CAP without hesitation. I can't possibly see Boobee leading the SEC in rushing or having close to 1600 yards

I find it amazing we have so many coming to the conclusion that Boobee Whitlow is some mediocre back based on his injury filled, first season. And he was coming off an ankle injury that forced a redshirt the previous season.

Name another Auburn ‘back that came in and set the world on fire during his first season.

Mike Dyer in 2010? Rudi Johnson?

I vote we give him some more time. It’s not like he had a bad season last year.

Whitlow had just shy of 1K rushing + receiving and 8 touchdowns as a freshman, 5.2 YPC.

Kerryon’s junior year was 1.5K rushing + receiving, 20 TDs, 4.8 YPC.

I don’t know if Whitlow will be the dynamic playmaker that Johnson was for us his junior season but Whitlow’s freshman season certainly gives me confidence he can produce better than KJ’s junior year

Agreed. He has a chance to burst onto the scene this year.

Plus, let’s be honest, the OL was bad last year and that definitely didn’t help his stat line.

Boobee could easily have a 1300-yd season this year. We'll be leaning on the run since we're breaking in a new QB & Gus calling the plays.

I love Whitlow

But I do hate that all the Auburn sites make entire articles about one player commenting on another. "Jeremy is our guy, he's a star."

False.

He was good his 2nd season on a 3-9 team, phenomenal his 3rd season.

Avg at best? I think he is much better than that.

He will have to show he can stay healthy if he is to be our feature back, and Gus doesn't run him into the ground.

I think he is still learning how to be RB coming from HS as a QB...so he now has 2 years under his belt.

I never understood why media and even our fans always want to compare the new back to our last great back, as is being done w. KJ.

They are totally 2 different types of RB...

Some freshman numbers from recent running backs...

Boobee Whitlow - 150 carries 787 yds 5.2 avg 6 TD 15 rec 173 yds 11.5 avg 2 TD
Kerryon Johnson - 52 carries 208 yds 4.0 avg 3 TD 14 rec 159 yds 11.4 avg 0 TD
Peyton Barber - 10 carries 54 yds 5.4 avg 0 TD
Tre Mason - 28 carries 161 yds 5.8 avg 1 TD
Mike Dyer - 182 carries 1093 yds 6.0 avg 5 TD 1 rec 9 yds 9.0 avg 0 TD

How people can write Boobee off after having that type of production as a freshman RB is wild to me. I think saying he's gonna be better than KJ is bold because KJ was so damn good but it's more crazy to think his ceiling is being an average back

I'm excited to see what he can do behind hopefully an improved OL, fully healthy & having a season under his belt

If I am not mistaken, he only played in the bowl game in 2011. He was pretty good at that. So my statement is true.

Good right out of the box
