he too was at Bama, finishing up his second season as OC there, a role he would be dismissed from a year later, the week before the CFP Championship game (the details behind that having been recently revealed) - he was fired from his “dream job” at USC during the 2013 season, with his HC record including his disastrous run in the NFL sitting at 40-36 (.526)

these are both ludicrous possibilities, because its quite apparent whom the AU Braintrust would have hired had Gustav been dismissed after the 2015 season - in fact he was already on staff at the time:

Nobody can be taken seriously if they wanted Gus fired after 2015. It is just too quick of a turnaround after riding the major highs.

The five loss season in 2016 would have been time to do it but somehow those five losses dumb lucked into a big 6 bowl game that year

2018 was the next opportunity. I dont really know why we kept Gus after then. Yes 2017 happened most recently but that burst of success was short lived.

i think the screwup was the GOBs deciding to fire him after his comments about the 2020 season being typical for AU as had it been a non-Covid year we would have added a couple of cupcake wins and finished 8-4 - which, while true, indicated his complacency with mediocrity

what should have happened in retrospect (hindsight is 50-50, as a wise man once said) is that he be put on the shortest of leashes going into 2021 with the expectation that we finish 9-3 or better, while seriously vetting our options

knowing the idiots in charge, we probably still would have screwed up the hire, but we certainly couldn’t have been much worse off

i still say we ended up being lucky we gave him that huge raise in 2017, because i know deep down in my heart of hearts that had he gone to Arky, Sexton would have talked our idiot Prez into hiring Chadwick, which would have been even more disastrous

Short leashes in college are tough… the perception is he’s a lame duck and that kills recruiting. Especially 6 yrs ago pre portal.

I’ll stand by firing Gus wasn’t a bad decision… the timing was not good given how the landscape was going to change… and obviously two awful hires.

That said we’re here now… Golesh will get his chance.

ON3

Alex Golesh and AU's coordinators are speakingto the media to discuss the Florida game and preview Vandy...

ALEX GOLESH

** "The sun did come up." UF was better in their 10 possessions than we were. Offensively, about as poor of a start as you can imagine. Handled really poorly after INT.

** End of 1H and start of 2H was huge swing. Rest of game plays out different if that doesn't happen. You can run the ball more if you don't get behind like that. Put a lot of pressure on OL.

** Defense, didn't get aligned and executed against an offense like that. Didn't adjust well in anyway on top of 24 missed tackles and 11 explosives. Can't play defense like that. Three plays stick out, TD on 3rd and long in 1H, 3rd and long in 1H (facemask leads to TD), and 4th and 1 long run.

** Not good enough from a coaching standpoint. Players needed to execute at a higher level, which is "on me." Had tough conversations with staff and kids. Moving on and getting ready to host Vandy.

** VU is playing with a freshman QB, playing well. Special looking player, really confident. Doesn't look young. Coming off big win. Similar offense to what we just played. Same defense that has continued to evolve. QB can make every throw. Defense likes to attack and dictate flow of game.

** Play calling has always been a group effort. Talk between every drive. Golesh inserts himself when he has a thought. Some with Kodi Burns, others. Joel Gordon calls the plays. He has a good feel. Can't all be talking at same time. We weren't good enough early in game, which falls on me. Scored TD's on 5 of 6 drives we got first 1st down.

** Felt like defense was on heels first few drives and after halftime. Never got settled. We were off from a focus standpoint, being able to play fast. Weren't in sync from communication standpoint. Our job is to figure out why. We have to allow our kids to play fast. Had a lot of conversations about how to get them to play fast.

** Being last in country in sacks allowed is combination of things. Tough in 2H playing from behind and UF being able to tee up on us. Four sacks came on one guy getting beat. One was on Byrum holding it too long. Got to be better and not putting guys in bad situations.

** Continuing to look at options on OL. Have to run it better and be able to protect better. WIll continue to work to get best 5 in there.

** Going to increase the urgency of how we do tackle and leverage drills during practice. Got to continue to make sure we're aligned better. A lot of missed tackles were because of guys getting in position late.

** On getting Byrum started faster: It's about getting him in a rhythm -- sometimes it's running early, quick game or getting it down the field.

** Surprised by how emotional we were. Golesh says he tries to stay even keeled. Had some guys too amped up. We talk a lot about settling down and focusing. Never really got settled on defense. You have to play with emotion but you can't play emotionally. Didn't settle in play to play. Got to coach it better in lead up to game. Didn't expect us to start like that on offense.

** Golesh said you can't look at VU as a must win. Want to stress the process of how we do everything. The next game is important and VU is next game. Worked really hard to just worry about right now, today. You press when you start looking at things differently. When you coach at Auburn, they all feel like must-wins because you're expected to win.

JOEL GORDON

** Thought there were some nerves early on. Moved the ball when we got 1st down. Pressing early.

** Vandy attacks a little differently than UF. Different schemes. You're always one week at a time. Got to get things fixed that didn't go well and build on things that did. VU is good on defense.

** Byrum needed to step up in pocket a couple of times, but it was his best game this season keeping eyes downfield. Got to continue to grow.

** Experience is key on a QB having an internal clock of when to hang in there and when to scramble. Made some great reads and throws. He takes the coaching well, no excuses.

** There's a little bit of scripting that goes on, sometimes it goes out window. Saturday, we just didn't execute. We had -3 yards in 1Q and had plenty of opportunities watching the film.

** First way to get RB's more involved is to not go 3-and-out the 1Q. Have to run ball better. We've tried to establish run game. Had to throw the ball a lot more than we wanted to in 2H against UF. Brown had three designed runs against UF. Cobb has to touch the ball more.

** Still haven't found right combination on OL. Competition is real. Just got to keep letting guys compete and wait for someone to step up and take a spot. Got to be better on OL.

** Wilson Zierer was just inconsistent, which is expected to some degree. You can see he's going to be a really good player. Most of the guys competing on OL are same guys that have been.

DJ DURKIN

** Durkin also talks about defense being too emotional, let to mistakes. UF did a good job with shifts and motions. We talked about them settling down at halftime but it didn't happen.

** Explosives happen due to missed tackles and missed assignments.

** Had a good response from players today. Have a lot of veterans that take pride in what they do.

** VU is a well coached team.

We will see if Golesh is running things right. That OL better be sitting on the bench vs Vandy.

In my case I never wanted Gus hired in the first place. And obviously there was no way in hell we were firing him after 2015, but all the warning signs that made him a mediocre coach were on full display in 2015, I could see the writing on the wall. But no doubt 2016 would have been the first realistic time to make a change.

The issue with all our firings is that our dumbass money guys never have someone concrete lined up before pulling the trigger. Which makes it a continuous clown show. Firing Gus after 2020 is the right move if you have someone decent lined, but it's idiotic if you plan to hire someone like Harsin or Freeze.

You guys can keep saying this enough and you may even start to believe it but he was the best coach and gave us some of the best memories that most of us will enjoy as a Auburn fan in our lifetimes.

Basically he gave us two amazing turn arounds. One in 2009 and one is 2013. Then the majic wins and being so close to another natty in 2013.

Id say he was more responsible (his offense anyway) for 2010 than Chizik was. It certainly was not the defense that won that year. No need to talk about 2013.

Its a old discussion and one we are still having almost 7 years after firing him because it was a mistake and now the program is stalled in this alternate losing state and you are looking for something to blame. Hell I even read this week on here where the program demise right now was his fault. LOL

Just keep telling yourself that. If it makes you feel better. Mean while, we are spiraling downward even more now and on our 3rd replacement and none of them can even win more games than they lose. The home field advantage that Auburn once had is now a joke. Nobody is scared of Auburn anymore.
