How is there no benefit to having our coaches get on the field with the players and evaluate what they can do?

exactly! You also see which players opt out and get a jump on who you need in the portal. Yet another dumb call from our leadership.

If it was a normal down year perhaps.

But I'm not really sure we have enough players to field a team. There simply might not enough left at some positions. Especially when considering butt hurt staff and the shell shocked who have been told they're overpaid.

I agree. It makes sense for someone like Miss St who has had a staff in place and is trying to take the next step forward and propel themselves into next season.

Auburn is in transition right now and doesn't need to focus on a bowl.

Or you win 38 0 and show everyone you're ready to ride. That's what an alpha would do. But this is auburn football in 2025
so of course we take the easy way. Pat dye would of played the game.

in case you hadn’t heard, Pat Dye is dead and hasn’t coached in 33 years

he also wouldn’t have had to deal with opt outs, NIL deals and transfer portals

CFB just isn’t the sport it was in Dye’s time

hell, for that matter its not the sport it was in most of Saban’s time

It seems awfully convenient to invoke Pat qualities in preferable HC candidates but when rubber meets the road you apologize for laziness and an uncompetitive attitude.

when Dye was our HC you had to have a minimum of 6 wins vs D1 (FBS) teams to even qualify for a bowl

we have 4

this isnt like a 10-win ND team turning down their bowl because they got snubbed by the committee

Haha probably a fair comment here but playing in a bowl game just doesn’t make sense. If it meant something like it did even just 15 years ago it would probably put me over the top, but it just doesn’t anymore. Not even to the players

We are not talking about his team. We are talking about taking over the predecessor's team. Bowl standards have clearly relaxed considering who all has rejected the bowl including Auburn. Golesh should have told those boys that are paid like m professional athletes that they are going bowling every year and this year will be no different.

We would all like to see our team go to a bowl but we have a coach who has been on the job for a week. The coaching staff are in transition and we are not sure who is going in the portal. At the moment, we have bigger fish to fry.

thats a fair point

to be honest, i’m pretty disappointed that we’re not bowling even though we dont “deserve” to

it would have been tremendously entertaining to see the Deuce vs Robbie comparisons since we would likely be up against Wake

we’re missing out on one last chance for jville to say “i told you so”

There’s no comparison. Deuce is on a different level than Ashford.

I’ve already been proven right that Ashford was better than Scooter Finley and Thorne. No need to keep talking about past trash QBs now that Arnold is gone too.

The portal doesn't open for weeks, signing day is over, the staff is mostly complete. Practicing for a bowl game is not going to hinder our future in any way whatsoever.

I acknowledge the tangible benefits of playing are low but i would just love the message that it sends. I want an attitude of we'll play anywhere anybody anytime and not a bunch of excuses or worry over what might go wrong. I know Pat, and the men like him, are gone but doesn't mean i cant get frustrated that auburn, college football, and society in general are worse off for it.

Bottom line is Golesh is not going to come in fresh off being hired and coach a bowl game. I would be surprised if any coach has done that, at least in recent memory. It's not his team, it's not his staff, and he didn't have an off-season with them. He isn't going to coach them in a bowl game using someone else's offense, plays, terminology, and a staff he didn't hire.

And if you want Golesh just to sit out and let Durkin take over for the bowl, then why? That would be a weird dynamic considering Durkin is staying on the staff. (Harsin watched the bowl from the stands but that was different because Steele was not being retained).

Look at how many of these teams are all making the same decision:

Who wants to see this miserable season prolonged by a shitty bowl game where you might have 1/3 of the team available/willing to play?

Losing teams need to sit their arse at home.

I am done with bowls. The amount of money we are spending on a roster, CFP or shake up roster for next season. I have always hated the bowl system.

Look, I dont normally want the extra bowl game when we just suck. I see a lot of teams in that tweet that probably feel the way we usually do. They just want the season over as fast as possible. AKA we see our failed experiment happen early in the season and there is no ace up our sleeve
to smooth the season.

But this year feels different. Maybe it is because we have not been to a bowl game in a while. Maybe it is because Jackson Arnold and Hugh were the failed experiment but we found competence in the backups, but once they were replaced there was a surge of confidence that entered the program. Sure we still lost, but there was offense and as a fan always wanting a decent offense (and not getting it except for spells since 2014) it made the season exciting again. If we were losing to Vandy and Bama the same way we were losing to Kentucky then I would be right there with the rest of those teams. However, we did find something, albeit way too late.

I also understand the logistical nightmares and I also understand the decison was already made, so my opinion is irrelevant, but for me it feels like the bowl game is more so one last opportunity to see Auburn offense shine before we have to endure another long 8 months of the offseason. Get the offense rolling to end the season. Get Jeremiah Cobb his 1000 yards rushing, and get the young guys 15 practices so they are better prepared for next year.

Me. Misery died in the Kentucky game.

I was there. It was my great fanhood that put the misery out to pasture.
