If you were making the decisions, what would you do re: QB for the final 2 games?

Good question posed on the Locked On podcast: Should Auburn ask Ashton Daniels if he wants to preserve his redshirt and preserve the extra year of eligibility and sit for the Mercer game? If he does, do you start Deuce or do you go with Arnold?
If you go with Deuce and he plays terrible and get behind late...do you play Daniels to go win the game, but that rules him out for Bama or next season?
Do you play Deuce hoping he shows enough to where you can promise him playing time next season? Or do you just roll JA out there to win the game knowing that Arnold is done at Auburn and Deuce is probably transferring?
What does the board do?

I think you have to leave it up to Daniels. If he wants to play then you play him. The 2nd question, if it gets to it, is who plays the best in practice the next 2 weeks

I’d talk to Ashton and his family about their plans and tell him we’d like him to stay next year and that means missing Mercer.
Play deuce.
If he sucks, play Jackson.
If Jackson refuses then make him refuse in front of the college football world on tv.

assuming Daniels says yes to redshirting (and he may not, he may be ready to move on with his life):
i would start Arnold and let him play for the first half and maybe the first series of the 2nd half unless he stinks up the joint
bring in Deuce the rest of the way
at this point of the season the outcome of the game is not terribly important

Im sure it is to Durkin if this is his job interview. If he could pull out all the stops and beat Bama after beating Mercer and then go win whatever shitty bowl game we got into, that makes him look way better to Cohen and tPTB.
Of course, as fans, it isnt really important, but for the guys in the locker room and the offices at Auburn it is.

See if the money is there to go hire the South Carolina quarterback. That is what college football has become.

Kinda where I am on it. If he wants to play, I think he has earned the right to lead the guys out there.
However, if he wants to give it another shot next year, I think you honor that and let Deuce see what he can do. Jackson Arnold is D.O.N.E. at Auburn. Deuce may not be ready, but maybe he goes out and plays awesome and it, at the very least gets him paid to stick around another year. At best, it helps retain him and some of the talent on offense.
Idk. Its not a good situation. Especially on retaining the talent already there. Everyone loves to tout the portal and how easy it is, but our QB situation and OL the past 2 years have shown that it isnt as easy as some would have us believe. It isnt always "plug and play".

I'm not sure it matters if AD burns his red shirt or not, even if he preserved it and was able to come back next year there's no guarantee he's the starting QB next year or if he even plays at all unless DJ is the permanent HC.
The new HC even if it's DJ may decide to bring in a transfer portal QB so I'm not sure if it's worth preserving his red shirt unless he's been guaranteed he'll be the starter next year or something.
I don't think we have to have him for Mercer so JA or DK can play Mercer then start him vs Bama. If we beat Bama and become bowl eligible or if there aren't enough bowl eligible teams and we make one at 5-7 then maybe that's where you decide if you want to burn his RS or not

Whatever Daniels wants as long as we win the game.

Unless he plans on transferring out for next year, everyone involved (coaches and Daniels) should want Daniels to play. Way too many unknowns about next year. New coach may bring a QB with him or have a portal guy he likes (likely). New coach may have an entirely different scheme. Duece (if he sticks) may be ready (not as likely imo).

Name Daniels as starter. He needs the in-game reps. Play a half and the first drive. Then bring in the leftie.
Then you wait for the next coach. He keeps Arnold and Deuce if he wants. Either one or both have to love AU (and it's money) or leave.
If Arnold pulls hamstring during his sleep and backs out of being the starter, then start Arnold. Arnold's actions during Mercer would tell a lot if our performance has been ex-CHF or Arnold.
If Daniels pulls himself out of playing, he is saying he is transferring.

I think you do right be Ashton, and any other kid who's played in only 3 or 4 games, and let him/them redshirt if they so desire. No guarantees some or even all won't transfer, but there's no guarantees for them either as they'll need to earn their playing time in '26.
Old fashioned, I know, but intercollegiate athletics is supposed to be about the student/athlete.

I say we sit Daniels.
And let Deuce go after the season.
The new coach will appreciate some experience on the roster over winning against Mercer from the prior season.
Daniels will need a raise, but we also need to get another QB that can be paid handsomely. Let those two battle it out.
And then there is Deuce's contract. New coach can decide if he wants to work with Freeze's project or get a project that he is familiar with already. Lot of raw ability QBs never make it and if they do they're at school 2 or 3.

The expectation/plan was that he would RS this year. That’s why Deuce got PT vs Ball State instead of Ashton and he only got thrown in when Freeze was trying for a Hail Mary to save his career.

This is correct. And at the time Freeze was thinking Ashton would be backing up Arnold next year and Ashton has been cool with it.
