Some years ago I read an article about recruiting and Clemson. Of all the coaches and personnel that have worked for Saban and gone on to bigger positions, there was only one time he got very annoyed at a former coach and it was when Dabo poached Bama's head of recruitment when he got the head coaching job at Clemson.

The fella was given a handsome package, tripled the staff, and replaced a "good ole boy" approach with an actual business model. Long before coaches start visiting recruits or the recruits have reached star status, 100s of them are on their "draft board", with a process to recruit them, their personal likes, their relationships, etc.

It was quite impressive. Its one thing to spot talent and offer a 4 or 5 star, its quite another to get a 13 year old to like your program long before the national recognition.

Honestly I think the NCAA should nix some of that if possible. It’s kind of creepy how much contact grown men give these kids.

Recruiting should probably start with some camps when they’re in high school and should be more focused on the X’s and O’s and academics than 9:00 pm texts from a grown man to a minor.

Urban Meyer mentioned that there were 3 positions to fill for a successful program to start with.

I believe they were
Recruiting Coordinator
Strength & Conditioning hire
I can't remember the third...but hope we get at least a few good hires in.

If the NFL would have a development league, this shot would go away.

If given 15 pts to put into that and recruiting it would have to be 8-7 for s&c. They're both extremely important but too often we lose our playmakers to injury.

It would also turn into a recruiting tool itself if our s&c program can boast fewer injuries than the competition.

Stronger is better but the more muscle you have the more energy and oxygen they take. If youre focusing only on strength and neglecting bone stength and flexibility then it becomes not if but when. Idk if we have or have had any body hardening aspect to our s&c but toughness > just strength.

Those field recruiters do a hell of lot of work in the spring and fall each year. They aren't there just to see fall games. They are on the fields during spring training and practices.

Spring is when we had the most contact with the recruiters. I laughed one time about it looking like someone had gone to The Foot Locker and bought one of every team cap on the rack.

funny enough it wasn't a heart condition that he has but something that stress induces the growth of a tumor...I believe he has had one removed from his brain but I could be incorrect.

It would suck at first, but I'd certainly support an NFL farm system. Get college back to the student/athlete model and away from NFL light.

I thought Urban had a “cyst” in the brain.

They can leak and cause headaches.

I’ll google and edit.

I saw a show about recruiting and the age some of them start. They had a fella who holds elite camps, he had a lot of sons of NFL players/former players in his camps. He said there is no restriction on offering schollys from an age standpoint. He agreed with you, he said these young guys already have talent AND attention at a very young age and then these schools come a calling.

Youngest he ever saw a kid offered....three days old from LSU. Now the kids dad had played at LSU and the pros, and the kid was over 12 pounds when he was born. I dont remember the name but the kid ended up going to LSU and by then was close to six and a half feet tall and over 300 lbs.
