damn good recruiting classes at WR, just not proven

This. In one class 2020, 3 or the 5 were higher ranked than Seth; and Malcolm Johnson 4th and Capers 5th are no slouches.

We get some good route trees, decent coaching, and a QB who can stay in the pocket and read progressions, and we got ourselves a passing game. Throw in some passes to "the forbidden continent" (aka across the middle) to one of our 14 tight ends and we are cooking.

But then there is that line issue.......

You have to consistently create a pocket first.

...And that is why he ended it with this...

"But then there is that line issue.......".

But I will add, Bo still needs to be better in the pocket, bc he was known to escape the pocket at times even when the line had very good protection for him.

No year is a throw away year at AU…

But I want to see the entire offense ran regardless of outcome. I want to see what our defensive scheme is. If Harsin is preaching culture change then prove it. Don’t run Tank 30 times a game and shorten games to keep games close. Play and coach like you would in year 5 or 7. I want to see what the staff is about much more then the players. We have never really had an issue of teams quitting at AU (exception 2012 and not sure they quit just maybe didn’t care) so give me all the coaches have.

Not ready to make any predictions but I’d heavily lean 8-4 at the current time. If there is a hard fought battle at QB, WR, Hunter comes in and carry the rock 8 or so times a game and can block, o line is slightly improved I might go out and say 9-3. Want to wait and see what some of the summer and fall camp reports are.

Again for me the production and results aren’t my end goal this year, developing a system and the players are. Which with the talent we have should at a minimum be 8ish wins.

I want to see a return to nasty OL play. Not dirty, but physical and if you are an OT and you have a 245 lb speed rusher when we run your way bury that kid in the ground when you get your punch and drive.

So much this.

While we’ve had unexpected success with two first-year HCs (bowden & Gustav) who coached very differently than their normal tendencies, I think long-term success would be more likely if Harsin approached it like Dye and Tubs did in their debuts, which was pretty much what you described: establish a process, set standards, and get the guys you have to buy in.

I want to see a disciplined team that plays assignment football and improves over the course of a season.

I want a program that looks better each year.

This is what every fan should be looking for and not focus on the wins whether it’s 6,8, or 15-0 Ship!

Where are we as a team as the season progresses.

So, you struggle with correlating how the team performs is the key to wins? Interesting

Life’s going to be tough but at least no one will accuse you of moral wins. Congrats.

The most telling will be how well he does with recruiting starting today. So far his team with Darren Uscher directing has done pretty well with the Transfer portal. I was watching War Rapport last night (preview with a Opelika Beat writer that looks at recruiting numbers), and we were 9th in the SEC in spending for top 5 classes with Malzahn--before this year's departure.

Malzahn just focused on AL/GA/FL, Harsin is going outside of those bounds with some focus there, but also focus in the rest of the US like how Bama does--how he did at Boise. This will be the most indicative sign of how we will fare in the future with Harsin's crew.

The first major departure from Malzahn, is actually having a separate recruiting director/staff. I wonder how Malzahn will fare with his BS tactics in UCF.

Recruiting is the life blood of every program. We can play the development game but we must regularly finish in the top10 to compete with our rivals. There are 6 SEC teams that regularly are in the Top 10. Bama, LSU, UGA, AU, aTm, and UF.

I’m all for right fit, right character, right this and that but to beat elite teams you need elite players. I have no doubt Harsin has a great strategic mind and a good developer of talent and offensive system however at the end of the day in the Top 6 of the conference you have to hold your own and win some individual matchups on the field.

I would like to see us not have to burn a timeout coming out of halftime like Gus had to a couple of times.

Timeouts, especially in the second half should be preserved until needed.

Gus burned timeouts ineffectively.

Well, since that isn't even a word I don't think I will be either.

Just to be clear for the mentally challenged, I'm not hoping for a 5-6 loss season, I just feel with all he needs to change, the lack of a real SEC OL, and putting his process in place, we may be getting that 5-6 loss season. I won't be putting the coach on the hot seat if that happens is my point. I will be hoping to see progress and recognize what he is trying to build up should it be a 5-6 loss season.

If he can build up a program that can be a consistent 10+ game winning program and a factor for the league championship and NC more often, I will be okay if he can't do it for approximately 2 years give or take while he builds it up.m, I won’t be calling for him to be fired.

I would love to have another 2010, 2013 in 2021, but I don't want 4-6 Losses for 5-8 years after. If you're happy with that then you may not like winning as much you say.

I honestly think we would go 4-8 next with CGM and in monumentally embarrassing fashion. Looking at the schedule our only SEC wins would be a toss up between SC or MSU. I’m not saying we’re going to come flying out of the gates but I feel like I can see some player development from the beginning to the end.

Gus was a system guy as opposed to a game-planning guy. And he could plug guys into the system and run it well. When an opposing schemed against the system, particularly with better athletes, Gus had no answers. None.

I don't believe this will be the case with Harsin. He is a highly organized guy who is a culture coach with excellent game-planning skills. He doesn't protect players like Gus did. He plays the best guy and then the next man up.

I think that takes longer to recruit for and longer to develop but I expect if we're patient with him, we'll see a real consistent program develop by '23 '24
