Actually a upgrade IMO

From Dan Wolken USA Today

Hearing more staff attrition from Penn State coming: OL coach Herb Hand headed toward a deal with Auburn, per person with knowledge.

We'll see. Good recruiter. He had some bad lines at PSU

I would say good hire but not an upgrade.

Yup. How he developed Greg & shon as well as get Reese on track are all undeniable...

On deeper thought though the overall upgrade would come in that hand is quite possibly the only person that Gus will listen to & influence needed tweaks to the O. If HH is hired I imagine he will be the run game coordinator as he has been nearly everywhere else.

This.

I remember watching Tulsa in their bowl game right after Chiz hired Gustav. Their offense was a machine. Would love to see the Hand of Malzahn offense at AU this fall.

I honestly don't know if a Tulsa O can work well in the SEC. I guess time will tell though.

The only way I see that argument is that Hand is such a good recruiter that the talent + development > Grimes' development

Yes... and with the possibility of bringing in some outside perspective... he hasn't coached with Gus since 2008.

Penn State's offensive line problems, and there are many, aren't going away in 2014.

And the trouble has been years in the making.

Penn State athletics released some scholarship information on Wednesday, noting the Lions currently have 64 healthy scholarship players, with approximately 16 true freshmen scheduled to redshirt this season.

quote:

And it all starts up front where there are four first-year starters on the line — tackle Andrew Nelson, center Angelo Mangiro and guards Brendan Mahon and Brian Gaia.

Franklin and O-line coach Herb Hand have leaned on six offensive linemen, with veteran Donvan Smith starting at left tackle and Derek Dowrey being used as a backup guard.

But that's it.

Because there is nobody else.

quote:

Smith and Dieffenbach, three-year starters, will be missed and PSU must decide where to put redshirt sophomore tackle Andrew Nelson, who manned the right side in 2014. Do you move the Hershey High School graduate to left tackle to protect Christian Hackenberg's blind side or keep him in a spot where he's comfortable? And if you don't move Nelson, who do you trust to play left tackle?

Angelo Mangiro and Brian Gaia joined Nelson as first-year starters last season and Mangiro, a fifth-year player, is one of PSU's most versatile linemen. He was the starting center but also played some tackle last fall and he has experience at guard.

Now, I do NOT think this is an upgrade, but Hand was in a bind from the get go in the Penn State situation.

Herb Hand worm video (25 sec. mark)

I've liked Hand since his days at Vandy.

quote:

Hand coached the offensive line at Vanderbilt the past four seasons, adding run game coordinator duties in 2013. In 2013, VU's offensive line blocked for 34 rushing touchdowns, including a school-record 14 by running back Jerron Seymour. Hand helped Wesley Johnson earned All-SEC honors in 2012 and 2013 and earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week a VU record four times. The Commodores’ Ryan Seymour was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 NFL Draft. Hand’s 2011-12 offensive lines were instrumental in Zac Stacy breaking the Vanderbilt season and career (3,143 yards) rushing records. During his tenture at Tulsa (2007-09), serving as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Hand helped the Golden Hurricanes lead the nation in total offense twice.

Time will tell if this hire is an upgrade or not. People making the argument it was a "comfortable" hire for Gus are dumb. True, they have a relationship, but that's not the only reason he was hired. Also, we're assuming that Hand wouldn't have been able to develop the same talent - talent he probably hasn't had the opportunity to coach at Vandy and Penn State.

This is a great move -- players will love him. He will challenge Gus on the O direction too when needed. I liked Grimes, but overall this is an upgrade. WDE!
