It’s a shame. Dude really was on top of the world offensively in 13 and 14. He should have been a great- especially with the defenses he put together in the latter years at Auburn.

Plumlee threw the ball 34 times for an average of 3.9 YPP. All while UCF averaged 5.5 YPC on the ground. Quintessential Gus ball.

You always hear about coaching staffs visiting other schools, or even NFL teams, to get ideas and evolve as offenses or defenses change. Yet to my untrained eye UCF was running the same eight-or-so plays that Gus did at AU. Furthermore, does anyone remember Gus' offense when he was OC under Chizik? Or while he was at Tulsa? Where did all those things go? It's like he ripped out 3/4 of his own offensive binder.

14’s offense was incredible. The issue is he became enamored with QBs that were supposed to be good passers but were average to below average runners. Many on here (myself included) thought a QB that can throw was going to be the thing that made his offense unstoppable because we assumed the running game would also be there. Boy were we wrong

People like you STILL don't understand. 2010 and 2013 were the anomalies, not what you saw and continue to see in every other one of his seasons. Those two offenses are not repeatable, they require VERY specific picture-perfect personnel groupings - which is what he had, and it was not "by design".
His "downfall" is dumbed down by people who talk as if all he needs is to commit to a running QB and he'd repeat 2013. That offense isn't easy to assemble, hence why you don't see any other coach doing it either. It's been almost 10 years since then, if all it took was some team committing to a running QB and running the same 4-5 plays over and over again up and down the field, then why has no one else done it?
Malzahn's best quality is the fact that he seemed to have a horse-shoe up his arse and was always in the right place at the right time. He lucked into Cam Newton and then three years later he lucked into one of the most dominant rushing attacks in recent memory. 2013 of course also required two of the most unlikely plays ever falling his way (vs. Georgia and vs. Bama). He had one gimmick that has long been closed off and figured out, and was the beneficiary of two offenses that simply aren't repeatable. That basically made his entire career.

Gotta disagree. 2017 and 2019 were national championship caliber football teams. Gus was just a bone head.

I never said that he never fielded a good team post 2010/2013. Both those teams were good, but I think you're stretching quite a bit with "National Championship". Both those teams lost several games, and both teams were embarrassed by non-powers in Bowl games (mighty UCF & Minnesota).

Both were NC talented teams. Gus' problem was/is he is terrible unorganized and bias to a fault. Gus had Malik Willis and could have had Robby Ashford/George Pickens yet went with D2 talent Bo.

No one has called for Gus to have been retained I think when the decision to move on everyone was good with it.
His replacement has sucked so far is the issue. I don’t think anyone has defended Gus at all in this thread so I don’t get your point

I hanged with Gus up until the 2019 season. It is way too early to say Harsin has sucked. The last few years of Gus left major holes on the roster. Every coach should get 4 years before we assess.
