Just to add to the Sweden talk

You can not contain a virus where more than 20% of the carriers are asymptomatic. It's impossible. So, with that out of the way, Sweden took the deaths early and won't have a problem this Fall.

The "flatten the curve" crowd has somehow morphed into the "we aren't going to get it" crowd. That's simply not the case. We chose to delay it.

173 dead in Alabama. That's .0035% of the population that we've shut down the entire fricking state for. Our hospitals are not overwhelmed like they said they would be. It's insanity.

Yeah I hate that kind of reporting.

Acting like it’s a failure even though that’s comes with the strategy. Only time will tell who is right. But until one of the two strategies is out of the woods, you don’t know which one was better.

Anybody in bham hear what woodfin said this morning?

Talked about crime rates being down YTD in all categories except homicide. COVID related he essentially said the same thing Ivey said that the shelter in place will remain in effect for now.

Love my mayor

I chuckled as well. That’s a pretty big caveat
Homicides were up 19.2% but violent crimes as a whole are down 25.4%, notably rape being down 65.6%.

During March 1–28, 2020, the overall laboratory-confirmed COVID-19–associated hospitalization rate was 4.6 per 100,000 population; rates increased with age, with the highest rates among adults aged =65 years. Approximately 90% of hospitalized patients identified through COVID-NET had one or more underlying conditions, the most common being obesity, hypertension, chronic lung disease, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease.

It would appear that the hospitalization rate is extremely low especially if you are healthy and under the age of 65. What did I win?

Well, you won the unnecessary sarcasm award for one.

That seems like a pretty small sample. Look, I'm not a scientist or a doctor. But a whole bunch of scientists and doctors were seriously concerned about hospitals being overrun because of the possibility of covid patients competing with patients with other problems. Personally I think it's absurd to conclude that those concerns are simply bullshite. I choose to believe that there is no vast conspiracy among health professionals.

I've never said that.

Even the most well intentioned people can be wrong. In this case, they've been wrong from the beginning. However, instead of acting like normal people and admitting their mistake, they've moved the goalpost and doubled down.

Alright. But I'm going to keep entertaining the possibility that hospitals haven't been overrun at least in part because of the measures that have been taken.

But their models and predictions of deaths and overrun hospitals were WITH the restrictions in place.

Minimally at best. Measures were enacted way too late, and not nearly strong enough to truly have that big of an impact. The measures put in place didn't take us from the brink of collapsing our entire healthcare system, to less than 50% capapcity in even the worst areas.

They were just flat wrong on their predictions, and are refusing to adjust protocols in light of it.

I don't know that we were ever at "the brink." Maybe some people thought that. But I think a lot feared that we would get to that point if nothing was done.

I guess I just have to take your word for it instead of the health experts who are allegedly refusing to admit they were wrong.

I mean, the entire reason for the social distancing was to prevent the hospitals from getting overwhelmed and collapsing the system. We were never actually on the brink of that happening, but the entire reaction that was communicated by the media about this was to prevent that. I'm not sure what else to tell you, but that was what they were "trying" to prevent. The entire flattening the curve movement was so that we don't overwhelm our hospitals. The entire panic reactions were because that is how it was reported.

Do you agree that our hospitals aren't in any real threat of being overwhelmed?

I don't know. At this point and if nothing changes, the answer would probably be yes. But if the entire population goes to Tool concerts and starts giant mosh pits? Maybe. I don't think I can give you a definitive answer.

But my head is not in the sand. That phrase only applies when someone is intentionally ignoring what is clear and undeniable truth. We aren't there yet.
