You are correct on all points - we kind of had to win that game because it felt won before it started - whole weekend…glad to be alive and at that 89 game.

2006 and 2007 Florida games were so much fun. As were 2004, 2006 LSU. Core memories for me. Hilarious that the coach at the helm is now holding up a major foreign policy initiative that affects the whole world

A few random memories about that ‘89 Iron Bowl (I was a sophomore at AU at the time).
I was standing in the student section with about a dozen friends/girlfriends before the game watching Bama players warm up. Bama players. On our field. It was surreal. About that time one of my friend’s girlfriends said, “I think the world is going to come to an end before kick off.” A 30-year-old Auburn fan hearing that today would think it was absolutely crazy…or at least extreme hyperbole. But at that moment in 1989, it sounded like a perfectly rational statement.
Like everyone, I remember the orange and blue haze.
Gumby was in the student section that day. He and I must have gone to Auburn at the same time, because Gumby was in the student section for a lot of games in the late 80s.
Ace’s over the shoulder catch on the first drive was right in front of me. I can’t say “I knew we were going to win” but it sure felt good.
The last 5 minutes felt like it lasted 5 hours.
After Rolling Toomer’s, we all went to The Heart of Auburn Motel because a girlfriend’s parents were staying there and she wanted to see them. The rest of us waited in the lobby. On the tv there, we saw Dye’s post-game interview from the field. He was asked, “Who deserves to go to the Sugar Bowl?” And said, “Tennessee has a great team. Alabama has a great team. We ain’t too bad.”
And speaking of being hoarse, I still was when I got home for Christmas break. I was taking to a high school friend (a big Bama fan) about something unrelated and he said, “Damn, listen to your voice! You must have yelled your arse off at the game!” I said, “I wanted to give all I could and do my part.” He smiled and said, “Bastard!”

Great weekend. Glad my wife and I were a part of it. Fun before (staring Thursday), during and after the game. It was my wife’s first Auburn game. Came back from our honeymoon for the weekend.
