My hypothesis is the boosters with the NIL told him to spread the money around to different positions..

Gave him a certain amount for the QB position. It’s not a coincidence Riley Leonard was a Crystal Ball lock, with his gf with Auburn ties, then he quickly bounced to Notre Dame

All it took was 1.5 seasons before the boosters somehow became the reason why we are where we are. Like clockwork with Auburn fans.

Dude, your conspiracy theory makes zero sense. If I'm Jimmy Rane, why the shite would I tell the HC to NOT get a hyped "star" QB who I can immediately stick into my Yellawood ads, and instead tell him to get a bunch of lesser players instead? Wealthy billionaires like flashy things - they don't typically operate under some sort of "less is more" model.

That was Freeze's own decision. He wanted to spend on HS talent instead, and he believed in himself and Thorne enough to not want to "overspend" on a QB. Yes, we WERE going to get Leonard, until they upped the price at the last minute. Freeze didn't think he was worth it so they said no thanks. You also forget that Freeze thinks very highly of his offensive abilities (clearly too much) - do you think its out of character for him to believe that with KLS, Coleman, Thompson, etc. coming in on top of himself being more directly involved in play-calling duties that Thorne would improve by default?

You saw the awful receiving last year. If you did your due diligence and found out that Thorne’s adjusted completion % was in 70s.. along with Fairweather sure hands (last year), Coleman, Thompson, and KLS coming in…

Would you have thought you could help Thorne out with the pieces to make him top 4 SEC QB play this year and spread the NIL around?

I’ll give you CHF underestimating Thornes ability to see the field, step up in the pocket and timing of release.

Here is your #1 problem. Any coach that knows what he is doing could tell that Payton Thorne could not start for most Alabama HS 7A teams.

Tell me I am wrong

Yeah, shite, let’s keep waiting. Ignore all the successful coaches that made improvements year one and year two. We know right now we have a loser. Shouldn’t take this long. How long does it take to develope a winning QB if you have the skills to identify them and then bring them in and coach them up.

Go back and check his record against uat, uga, lsu, tn, and fl. It was a stellar 8-17. Also see how many near losses he avoided like OT vs Jax St in 2005, etc.

I like Gus as a person, but when you recruit OL like he did (or really didn't) you get what we're seeing today. I love the guys that are playing their hearts out for us but we are waaay behind in real talent.

My problem with Hugh is this team has 1-3 losses max with a LOT of other coaches in FBS right now. They're not talented, the QB is not good, but there is also zero coaching on Saturdays to keep them out of awful situations

The recruiting is great, but I wonder how much is Hugh and how much is NIL. If we had someone recruiting 80% as well as Hugh that actually had a clue how to call the game to his team's strengths, that would be an upgrade.

None of that refutes my point that Gus never absolutely botched a season like Freeze is currently doing. Did Gus screw up the QB evaluation like Hugh did this year? Yep, a few times. Still got the team to grind out some wins and avoid the losing season. One of Gus’s worst years would be amazing progress for Hugh right now.

Oh, you also read that article where this was the main theme and also stated Malzahn never lost a 14 point lead? I read that and just chuckled thinking of LSU.

you’re on the wrong board if you think that. I took hell for years on here because I knew GusShortBus was mediocre.

Don’t know what article you are talking about, but comparing Gus blowing the 2017 LSU game to Freeze blowing a whole season is like comparing a small grease fire on the stove to burning the whole house down because the fire department shows up for both.

I don't think that's true. I think most people were ready to move on from him as our head football coach but I think most people also respect him overall.

Count me in on that.

LOVE Malzahn and always pull for him but his time expired at Auburn. He flamed out.

I always knew with time Malzahn would be thought of more favorably.

I would argue that Malzahn was indeed hated. I remember in 2017 people getting pissed at Malzahn just because he visited Arkansas friends during the Arkansas weekend on a Friday night. Yall were consumed with hate for the guy and every little thing was picked apart whether it needed to be or not. I at least disliked him for reasons that he actually earned.

Also, lot of people didnt like Lanier because he was the lone Gus guy, and he took the brunt of the hate, and for that I do not apologize. Lanier got stronger from it all.

Hypothetical:

If we somehow manage to beat Kentucky, Vandy and Bama, will this salvage some pride and set us up with a spring board for next season?

I am always eternally hopeful

What a springboard that would be! I hate thinking of stuff like that though because it's basically windowshopping
