I'm amazed that some of you are certain Gus should be gone but that Stoops isn't a quality enough replacement.. I'm assuming y'all's shortlist really is Dabo, Saban, Belichick

I went a little retard. Looking at his record, he would be an upgrade.

Stoops kicked the shite out of Saban in the Sugar Bowl.

Unlike Gus, he kept his foot on the throats of Bama.

He would be, yes. But I am not convinced he's the same Bob Stoops circa 2000-2005. He really took a nosedive at OU in his later years.

That said, we'd be a fundamentally sound program on offense again. We'd see no more Whirlybirds and we'd finally have a route tree more complex than a pee wee team. But even so, we won't be getting 2000's Bob Stoops, imo.

If nothing else Stoops would provide instant credibility with recruits/assistants and create a gigantic Stoops-Saban narrative. Whether he could build that into something more viable in the longterm is questionable in the modern SECW, but the immediate impact alone would probably send a jolt into the program.

That said, none of this is going to happen

I thought so too, but he mainly won 9-10 games a year with an 8-5 sprinkled in. He was actually strong his last few years.

Stoops' record at OU

1999 7–5
2000 13–0
2001 11–2
2002 12–2
2003 12–2
2004 12–1
2005 8–4
2006 11–3
2007 11–3
2008 12–2
2009 8–5
2010 12–2
2011 10–3
2012 10–3
2013 11–2
2014 8–5
2015 11–2
2016 11–2

Hell, I'd take 10-2 every year if it meant some consistency and we'd at least be in the hunt year in and year out.

For some perspective, Oklahoma was terrible before Stoops. He took them to a national championship in year 2 and won. He’s also beat Saban, 45-31.

I would be all about that hire.

But wouldn't there have to be a substantial reduction in the buyout. I mean shite, what would it cost to lock him down?
GODDAM Lucy has me trying to kick the ball now.

Mark Murphy weighed in on it over at ITAT and basically said all the conventional wisdom is still in play (how the frick can we afford this) but that Gus has no support and who knows what is going to happen.

Which is...interesting.

Record or not. Stoops is even older than when he retired...for reasons that aren't entirely clear. Health? Wanting more family time? The reasons were amorphous, regardless.

I understand Urban Meyer has done well at OSU coming out of retirement, but how often does that happen?

Auburn needs to be thinking 5-7 years down the road. If they hire Bob Stoops -- and I hope they don't -- they damn sure don't need to give him a Jimbo-type contract that will be hard to get out of.
