Well yes, of course but there's more to the story though. what quality coach was coming in for year 2 of Harsin under those conditions? Hell those two might have been the best options he had.

I like to think Aubie SPR is a retard.

He is willing to completely buy in to a coach that just got fired last week because he heard a new name tonight.

I’m not sure how anyone is excited about this DC guy. At the same time, I’m not sure it’s a disaster either. Mainly, I’m just not sure

But it’s a hire. I think clearly freeze went down the list a pretty long ways before landing on this guy at this date.

I didn’t know if Steele would be worth a damn either when we hired him. Who knows

There is always more to the story. Nobody considers that Bobo actually improved Bo Nix a good bit or Bobo’s shite talent on offense that he had to work with. Bobo wasn’t amazing but he was a pro.

Chiming in with my 2 cents.

Coordinator hires seem a little underwhelming considering Roberts was fired by Baylor. Big 12 lacks defense so him getting fired isn’t a good look. I do think it makes sense to hire coordinators who are better true coaches and let position coaches be your ace recruiters. I’m hoping it works out and think it can, just not sure that I would say I’m very excited about either of these hires.

I guess I’m happy about a dinosaur that didn’t a have power 5 job until 2018 and mentored a guy that just fired his arse.

I guess he wants our state retirement.

I don’t think anyone is.

As others have pointed out, I think Roberts fits what Freeze is looking for in a DC… to me, it’s less risk/less reward kinda hire…. And with an offensive minded HC, it make sense to go the safer route for DC (similar to Gus with Steele or even Harsin with Mason).

ETA: Roberts is absolutely the kinda hire Pittman should be making… and is similar to his Odom hire.

Freeze scraped the bottom of the barrel for these guys.

Montgomery sounds alright.

This hire seems pathetic. I look forward to the increased forced turnovers and that’s about it with this guy.

I have no idea on the guy, just know he has experience as a DC opposite an up tempo offense that is on and off the field quickly, alot. I'd think there is a ceiling to how strong a defense can be opposite that offense, it's lower than other offenses, the players will get gased. We will need depth on D, and already looks like that is being worked on. The top DCs probably don't have the balls for the job, we need a bend don't break defense

Roberts is one hell of a defensive Xs and Os guy, and if anyone spends 20 minutes researching, you can find that out pretty quick. That was Hugh's priority for a DC right from day 1. Can he put it together here? Who knows. Lots of smart coaches don't make it if their not a fit for the place/situation/staff/time. But with a staff of good recruiters, I'd say this guy has a pretty good chance.

Montgomery is a slam dunk.

I think I’ll trust Freeze until I have reason not to. Not going to pretend I know shite about these guys (like most other people) and I will trust the guy we are paying $6.5 million to make these kinds of decisions.

People were concerned the new hires can't recruit. This weekend has shown otherwise. Like you said, until it has been shown these weren't good hires, I'm going to assume a lifelong coach with past success knows more about hiring assistants than me, and far more about these guys than me. I'm assumimg they're good coaches until they show HERE they aren't

I’m a fan of the Montgomery hire. At first glance not a fan of Roberts but also know next to nothing about the guy.

There is a one hour YouTube video called “stopping the spread offense” thus he is dubbed an X’s and O’s Guy.
