Dave Bartoo was just on the Chuck Oliver Show. This is a MUST listen!

Skip ahead to 34:25 to get to the segment where he talks about Auburn.

Highlights:

1) He confirms that he was involved in the hiring search for Auburn. Zero surprise that Freeze ended up being the guy as he grades out extremely high by Bartoo's metrics. Cohen used Bartoo's firm at MSU as well when they hired Mike Leach.

2) He talks about the Coordinator hires:

Ron Roberts: Refers to him as a "3.5 - 4 star DC". He states that his "highs" are "really high", and his lows are "a little bit lower than I'd like". Thinks he will be excellent specifically in developing the young players on defense.

Philip Montgomery: Reiterates the elite metrics that have been posted already in Tweets. He is a Top 5% QB coach in the 5 seasons wherein he has held that title. States that even this past season at Tulsa that their offense was 27th in offensive scoring efficiency and 111th in defensive scoring efficiency (ie: they were 4-8 because of their horrible defense). "You are getting a VERY good offensive coordinator, you are getting an EXCEPTIONAL QB coach".

3) Notes that Montgomery joins an already exceptional OC/QB coach in Freeze himself. He loves the offensive staff (Cadillac grades as a ~Top 20% RB coach I believe). Called out the offensive line coach as well, and most interestingly....

4) He said the WR coach is a "RECRUITING BEAST". This obviously implies that the hire has already been decided but that it hasn't been announced yet.

Also, interestingly in the segment about MSU/Leach he talks about how Zach Arnett actually did not grade well at all this season as a DC. I've heard him state this in the past as well. He went on to state that no way in hell should MSU make him the HC.

We know nothing compared to the analytics, research, and recruiting DEPARTMENTS and FIRMS who literally do it for a living. We have no idea.

Without knowing anything on what Bartoo's methodologies are for his analytics, I would speculate that Roberts does really well when he has older, experienced players, and he probably struggles more than most when his two-deep is younger. He does some really heady stuff on defense. He puts a lot on his DB's.

Interesting on Arnett. I'll listen now.

(edit) Bartoo is pretty annoying to listen to. He does say that Roberts will be great for mentoring the young defensive coaches on staff while also making the points you mentioned. When he talked about Arnett he didn't mention anything specific, but he did say that he's not elite at anything and that MSU should at least find someone that's elite at something for a HC, and they shouldn't settle for an assistant. He mentioned the Illinois DC/Purdue HC being elite. I want to find out the calculus behind Bartoo's analytics.

Best part was when Bartoo said that Arky, Ole Miss, and State are the bottom dwellers of the SECW and those jobs are pressure cookers because of their crazy fan expectations

From what I have read about Roberts, I have seen several comments made about how complex his defense is and that is the main concern is coming into a new program and getting the defense clicking on all cylinders.

It’s not that damn complex. Half a year and the majority of the players should be fairly comfortable. Then you can add more complexity. Even though it’s complex I still think his bad instruction is easy to follow. Gets the damn ball. If the ball is in the air go get it.

Hoke did an interview with RG3 about OC PM it's paywalled so here's a couple of tidbits.

quote:

“The quarterbacks should be excited,” Griffin III told Auburn Live.

quote:

“We weren’t very good when we first got here, so he was able to extend plays and make things happen, make a lot of plays with his feet,” Philip Montgomery said in 2012 as Griffin III prepared for the NFL Draft. “As we grew, so did he. His maturation process as a quarterback has really developed in the sense that now he’s manipulating the pocket. Now he’s doing things down the field. When you really look at it, he made umpteen zillion more plays with his arm this year than he did with his feet.”

quote:

“Coach ‘Monty’ has extensive knowledge and experience in developing a plan to make his quarterback develop, improve and succeed,” Griffin III said. “He knows how to assess what each quarterback does best, how to get them in rhythm early in games, and how to get them back in rhythm during those mid-game slumps.”

quote:

“It’s not a spread-you-out and throw it everywhere offense. It’s based on the running game. He will run it 40 times, if that’s the best way to win,” Griffin III said.

quote:

“‘Monty’ is an even better person than coach, and he truly cares about his guys,” Griffin III said. “He puts them in the best position to succeed.”
