One thing I would call atrocious considering our pedigree at the position would be that we have only had 3 LB's drafted in the past 15 drafts.

5th Round Will Herring
6th Round Deshaun Davis
6th Round KJ Britt

But...But... T-Will is our best recruiter

That is bad.

I wonder how Gus' draft picks were spread out over the draft? Were most of his draftees in rounds 3 and above?
I would think DB is a positive for our drafting.

We need a whole squad of those Kansas big boys!

Great deal for him!

Most were drafted in rounds 3-7, with round 3 being where our "best" prospects would typically fall during the second half of his tenure here. Basically below average. The total number of players drafted looks "OK", but sending a guy in the 5th or 6th round doesn't really count for anything for an SEC program.

it's pretty equal from rounds 1-7. Probably 3-4 in each of the rounds.

15 picks in rounds 1-3
15 picks in rounds 5-7
6 picks in round 4

Round 1 – 4 players
Round 2 – 4 players
Round 3 – 7 players
Round 4 – 6 players
Round 5 – 6 players
Round 6 – 6 players
Round 7 – 3 players

Corch, you are really killing the narrative here man.

Why are you wasting your time man. Next it will be, Gus really sucked getting field goal holders drafted in the first round that were 4* line backers coming out of high schools that were atleast in 6A competition in the state of Florida

You do realize any player drafted in the first 3 rounds and the first 4 picks would be considered a Top 100 player essentially that year. How many top 100 players do we sign a year? First 4 rounds would be the top 128. 5 Rounds top 150. 6th round top 182. 7th would be top 224. Again how many top 225 players do we sign each recruiting cycle. We don't even have 1 player in the top 225 this cycle.

Facts don't care about anyone's feeling my brother.

And don't get me started on where our offense ranked over the course of Gus' tenure. That would really shatter some folks feelings.

He's really not. Derrick Brown and Noah Igbinoghene, drafted in 2020, were our first 1st round picks since 2014 (Greg Robinson and Dee Ford). There were literally 5 drafts in between the 2014 and 2020 drafts. Five whole drafts without a 1st round pick for an elite SEC program. That 2020 draft was sandwiched in between two other drafts (2019 and 2021) wherein our highest pick came out of the 3rd round.

His draft record basically mirrors his production on the field: every 4 or so years he has an elite season, and every 4 or so years he sends a 1st round pick or two to the NFL. That might be impressive for a school like Kentucky, but it's entirely average for a program of our caliber that "supposedly" recruited well (hint: they actually didn't, as I've been repeating ad-nauseum).

Let's look at Vanderbilt since 2017:

2017: Zach Cunningham drafted in the 2nd round (drafted higher than any Auburn player)
2018: Oren Burks drafted in the 3rd round
2019: Joejuan Williams drafted in the 2nd round (drafted higher than any Auburn player)
2020: Ke'Shawn Vaughn drafted in the 3rd round
2021: Dayo Odeyingbo drafted in the 2nd round (drafted higher than any Auburn player)

In 3 out of the last 5 drafts, a Vanderbilt player has been drafted higher than any Auburn player.

Again, this is the definition of mediocrity.

Well, he was...

6th Round Deshaun Davis

That says more about his ability to develop players as a position coach. (Yes, I know he didn't coach all of those guys). But to deny the fact that T-Will could bring in high school talent is just ignoring reality.

He didn't just recruit LB. He was told who to go recruit. He couldn't make Gus Malzahn do a better job at managing the roster and going after positions of need rather than loading up on 4* kids where we already had plenty of bodies.

I've yet to see anyone say that Gus and/or his staff's best recruiters couldn't recruit. The roster management and targeting specific positions of need was the issue. We will never, ever beat out the likes of Bama, UGA, and LSU for blue chip kids consistently. Yes we will steal a couple here and there. That means there has to be an emphasis on bringing in guys that can make an impact at the places where there are weaknesses. And probably more importantly, player development. It does you no good to bring in 3 4* kids at say WR when there are 2 SO and 2 JR 4* WR already there. Especially if we are thin in the secondary. Or have no experience at RB. Yeah, your class ranking for that year may jump up several spots, but what does that do for your depth at RB or at Safety?

Now you are in a scramble the next cycle and put yourself in a position where it really hurts if you miss out on your top targets at those positions. Then it just snowballs from there and you're having to put bandaids on something that needs stitches.

yes I got it, it was horrible man. Good seasons good draft, average seasons average draft, bad seasons bad draft. It's always been that way.

I think with Bama since 2009, and us 2010 and 2013 you guys forget how hard it actually is to play for and win a championship. Or for any player to get drafted.

Jville pinned for him more than anyone. Dude is sitting the bench at Kentucky.

But but he got screwed at Auburn. Dude loves to throw rocks at me.

Ummm...Joey is the starter this year. And check this out:

Gatewood throws ZERO interceptions in over 500 attempts during spring practice

quote:

“I was very, very pleased with the way he came out of spring,” Stoops said. “I thought he showed great poise. He’s gaining more and more confidence with all the reps.” Joey Gatewood did not throw a single interception during spring practice.

Stoops was particularly happy with the deep pass, a weapon that’s been missing from the UK arsenal for years. “I was also pleased with Joey’s accuracy, in particular getting the ball down the field,” Stoops said. “He was accurate down the field, which has been a pet peeve of mine for years because we’ve had opportunities and missed them.”
