AUBURN LEADS THE WAY WITH 14 NFL ROOKIES THIS SEASON

quote:

You know you've placed a lot of rookies in the NFL when one of your guys replaces another one of your guys as a kick returner.

That's what happened for Auburn coach Gus Malzahn last week when Nick Marshall stepped in to replace the injured Corey Grant as the kick returner for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Auburn has 14 rookies, the most of any big-time school, spread across NFL rosters this season.

"I think that says our guys can move on to the next level and be successful," Malzahn said. "I'm happy that from last year's group so many of those guys have made it."

The 14 players are on active, injured or reserve NFL rosters. In all, 31 former Auburn players are in the NFL including Cam Newton, who's among the early leaders to be named the MVP.

Malzahn said the newest group to make is a plus for Auburn.

"Those guys were big factors in us making the national championship game, and helped us win a lot of games," Malzahn said. "It shows you can be developed here, go to the next level and be successful.

"When we first got here there were only a couple of guys who made it. The goal of ours was to get this thing back where it should be as far as getting guys to the next level. We're very excited about that as a program."

Receiver Quan Bray made a move this week when Indianapolis promoted him from the practice squad to the active roster.

Marshall, a quarterback for Malzahn the previous two seasons, is a defensive back for the Jaguars. But he jumped in to return kickoffs last week, returning his only chance 19 yards. He replaced Grant, his old backfield mate at Auburn, who is now out for the season with a hip flexor injury. Grant averaged 27½ yards on his eight kickoff returns.

Grant's move to the injured reserve still leaves Auburn with nine active rookies, tied for the most of any FBS school.

All undrafted I believe. Pretty cool to see these guys getting shots. Sucks for Grant with the injury as he was doing some nice things on returns

Makes it even more apparent the opportunity we blew last year.

So does this kind of indicate lack of development or utilization on the defensive side of the ball? If all those guys can make it to the NFL we should of had some better defenses.

we've got a double-edged sword situation on defense.

Changing coordinators unquestionably hurts the team from a playbook knowledge/scheme standpoint and we do change DCs every 3 years or so lately. That's horrible. But we as a fanbase are so rabid that if the results don't appear immediately we want that DC fired. So basically after a frosh learns a system and gets comfortable and is ready to roll, then we make him go back to being a frosh in a brand new system.

We've had 4 coordinators in 5 years and had the same issues. 2/3 former coordinators have had solid(roof) and great (BVG) defenses at their later destinations. All four were solid DCs before coming to AU

That would suggest it is a cultural issue on the football team. Maybe the type of kids we've recruited, maybe the mental attitude the defense take or something else. It is time for AU fans to stop blaming the DC

The loss of that talent plus the last two shitshow recruiting classes by Chiz are why we are where we are today.

Has to be something. I cannot grasp why defense has been so shitty for so long no matter who you put back there coaching. Its not like we recruit complete scrubs for every position on defense. A lot of the guys look like they can physically play in the conference. A lot were heavily recruited out of high school/JUCO too. Its a really hard thing to understand. They look slow, soft and dumb as frick out there sometimes. I want to put my fist through a wall when they take the field.

Plus, JJ, JR, Carl, Duke... key players who do not contribute...

Systems are great and familiarity helps for sure but sometimes it just comes down to can you cover your man, get off your block, or tackle the ball carrier. For years we have been largely unable to do any of those fundamental things that have very little to do with X's and O's.

Really you can only blame Chizik for one class right now.

The '11 class is only RS SRs now so most have graduated and moved on. The '12 class definitely sucked. The '13 class that Gus had to piece together after he got hired is also hurting us. That class was pretty top heavy (doesn't help that most of the top players are hurt/gone) and had a lot of JUCOs.

Luckily, the '14 & '15 classes look pretty solid so far.

I guess I'm just surprised that no one saw this coming. In retrospect, it makes sense that we'd be down this year.

So we should expect for any new DC to have growing pains as he tries to fix the issue. We are just stupid for thinking things would change this season and not give it time

No we aren't, good coaches doing a good job can make immediate impacts. It's pretty common actually.

We would be stupid if we thought we were going to turn into alabama defensively overnight but from where we came from significant improvement was not an unrealistic expectation.

I disagree. You see immediate coaching impacts every year. Look at Michigan this year. That defense is completely different than a year ago, and Harbaugh is the reason.

The way we are constantly out of position is inexcusable. We must have some really dumb players.

Technically they are improved but it wasn't like they were coming from nothing. On top of recruiting well, Michigan didn't have the fundamental issues like tackling, aggressiveness or morons to deal with.

Michigan 2014 Team Defense Rankings

Yards Per Game: #10 (311 YPG)
Points Per Game: #22 (22.4 PPG)
Football Outsiders Efficiency Rank: #18

The 2015 Harbaugh Defense didn't play Notre Dame in week 2 and has yet to play Ohio State as well.
