The expectation is that he would "learn" and be eased into taking on full play-calling duties. So he would be moving under the pretense that he would become a full OC at an SEC school within a year or so, which is still a step-up from QB Coach in the NFL. I don't believe that Harsin has any plans of being the play-caller indefinitely.

I would also think that $700K per year is a hefty raise over what he's making as an NFL position coach.

Did you guys ready the article in the link? Pretty good stuff. Sounds like we got a good up and comer. Glad we didn’t hire a re-tread. In the article, it said that Davis actually backed up Wilson in Seattle in 2017. Then, he came back as his QB coach in 2020.

Austin Davis named Offensive Coordinator at Auburn

A few quotes from guys he’s worked with:
quote:

Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks Head Coach
"Austin is going to show that he is one of the bright young minds in the game. He's been able to transition from player to coach unlike anybody I've ever seen. It was just so smooth for him, and he's been thinking like a coach for a long time, obviously because he was able to capture the role. Russ (Wilson) thinks the world of him, Shane (Waldron) thinks the world of him, and I do too because he is really, really good at what he does. He is going to really be a big benefit to their program."

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks Quarterback
"I think Austin is going to be a brilliant offensive coordinator and potential head coach one day. He has a passion for the game, number one. Number two, he's got an understanding of the game as he's played the position at the highest level in the National Football League. And three, he's an amazing teacher. He's an amazing teacher of the game. He keeps it simple in terms of relaxing the quarterback's mind. He'll be an amazing coach at Auburn."

Blake Anderson, Utah State Head Coach (Davis' OC at Southern Miss)
"Austin Davis is an amazing hire for Bryan Harsin and the Auburn football program. His path from four-year starter and Conference USA Champion as a walk-on quarterback at Southern Miss, to a starter in the NFL, tells you all you need to know about his work ethic, competitive drive, and passion for the game. I have watched Austin grow in this profession since retiring as a player and those same traits have only been magnified as a coach. He will do an outstanding job as an offensive coordinator at this level."

Larry Fedora, Former North Carolina and Southern Miss Head Coach (Davis' Head Coach at Southern Miss)
"What a great hire by Bryan Harsin and Auburn. Austin Davis is a tireless worker who will be innovative in his offensive approach. He has that 'it' factor as a leader and mentor everyone wants. Austin is an overachiever in everything he attacks, whether that's being a walk-on quarterback and leading his team to a conference championship or being an undrafted free agent in the NFL only to prove folks wrong and play seven years at the highest level. I know his character, his knack for developing strong relationships and the quality of his work on the offensive side of the ball. Austin will make Auburn fans proud."

He had on the job training with one of the greatest QBs of our time. I'm good with the hire.

I'm optimistic and I like the hire, but I always try to ignore that kind of talk.

For example, Scot Loeffler in 2012.

quote:

Lloyd Carr, former Michigan Head Coach (1995-2007) on Loeffler
"I'm delighted for Scot and think that he is a great fit for Auburn. He's a bright guy that has a great passion for the game. Not only is he an outstanding coach, but a great recruiter. He's a great teacher and there's not a quarterback out there that wouldn't enjoy playing for him.
Scot is a team guy, one of those coaches who will call a game with the mindset of doing whatever it takes to win. Some days it may be to protect the defense and some days to light it up. He will call his offense that will give the team its best chance to win.
His strength is that he is honest and up front with players and they will respect him because he has a wonderful knowledge of the game.
There will be a lot of happy fans at Auburn with this hire and a lot of new Auburn fans in the Midwest."
Brian Griese, former Michigan (1993-97) and NFL quarterback (1998-2008)
"Scot Loeffler is unquestionably one of the best teachers of quarterback play in football at any level. His ability to teach the fundamentals of the quarterback position no matter what style of offense make him unique in college football. I don't know many coaches that could coach Tom Brady and maximize his potential and then turn around and coach Tim Tebow and do the same. As a result of being involved in a number of different offensive styles I think Scot will bring a diverse and effective approach to the Auburn football team."

What is this 2012 you speak of. Auburn did not play Football in 2012.

To be fair to Loeffler, there was a lot more to the demise of Auburn football that year than Scot Loeffler. It also didn’t help that none of the players really fit his system at all.

He had a fairly impressive resume prior to coming to Auburn, even outside being Tom Brady’s coach

Might be nothing to it but 247 suggested Kiesau might be an OC candidate for Kiffin.

That would solve the getting Trovon Reed an on field position, so he could recruit off campus thing

I’d love it. It would let Reed become a full time recruiter. He seems to have… it as a recruiter.

But I will believe it when I see it… (one of the Boise Boys leaving)

Should probably slow down on the Trovon Reed stuff. That big a jump would be really shocking for a guy with no coaching experience, regardless of how well he recruited (we also know that Harsin isn't going to hire a guy just to recruit). If Trovon wants to coach, he'll likely need to be sent down elsewhere to develop a bit ala Zac Etheridge (Louisiana and then Houston before Auburn).
