Gonna need to get really good on the perimeter with strip and rip defense. We will need to turnover teams a lot. Thankfully we do have length and athleticism outside to do that it’s just gonna be weird not having a shot blocker. Even Ant McLemore blocked a lot of shots.

Last night was a combo of two things-

BC was hot shooting from 3 but AUs defense was about what it looked like against OSU. Which was parts confused on assignment, just plain porous at others and out of position on others. That has to get straight. We may not have the bigs we are accustomed to, but we have to get an identity there.

The Memphis game was different in that Memphis basically handed us the ball 23 times- we didn’t turn it over as much as they gave it up to us.

I do think this team will struggle defensively versus what we are used to seeing or with a defensive identity and will need to ensure we don’t have too many empty possessions so we can score to create separation. We can score but help us if and when we go through cold spells against physical teams in the paint.

I just think it is a bit premature to judge anything. This team hasn't even had its first plane fight yet. They are babies. Let them figure some things out.

I don’t disagree with that point at all- it is a small sample size and they are new and will have to figure it out- gel if you will. That’s the challenge of these rosters turning over like they do these days.

For sure. It was not a good performance, not getting around that. However, we saw a glimpse of their potential against Memphis. Memphis may be a bad team this year but they still have talent. We shot the ball abysmally and played lazy on D, about the same as we looked against OSU which also went to OT.

Team is going to have to figure out who the leaders will be and who will set the tone defensively. Which, should all sort themselves out once they have a good dust up at 10,000 feet.

Never seen another team get so many blocks on us. Crazy

We gotta get tougher finishing at the rim and play D for a full 40 mins, not just the final 2 of regulation.

Another thing that I didn't think about until this morning...............that arena was as quiet as I have heard in quite a while. We never really went on a run to get them going.

We had a little spurt sometime around the middle of the 2nd half that got the crowd going then we gave up another run to them that killed it.

Post game presser with SWA and Murphy. Question: Did you feel like this a wake up call? SWA: ...most people would overlook this team and think this is Bethune Cookman, where have we ever heard of Bethune Cookman...they are a good team, and we gave them respect...I mean it's definitely a wake up call because we can't go back to our old habits of Oklahoma St but I don't think it was necessarily what you'd call us sniffing our own butts and thinking how good we are just because we beat Memphis.

I looked in on the Utah Utes to see what Jahki Howard was up to. They won their first one, but Howard logged zero minutes. So, I went looking around the interwebs to see why and found this from one of their message boards:

quote:

Howard is really struggling right now. Needs to work it out in practice before he plays significant minutes. Probably only see him at the end of game blowouts unless he improves dramatically
