…most of the classes we’ve had recently have been close to a 50/50 split between 4*s and 3*s.

I will panic if once we have played games, had kids on campus during games on visits, and we miss out on a bunch of players. Or worse the few we have decommit

The majority of our classes have been similar with maybe 1-2 5 stars.

There’s the usual naysayers in here on recruiting (of which I’m not one) are panicking a bit early but they do have a point this time.

there’s definitely a dip in recruiting if everything said in here is true. We’re not getting higher level 4 stars we usually get. Just going by stars is a little silly as there are different levels of 4 stars and 3 stars.

Looking at 247’s grades is more accurate IMO. We’re usually getting quite a few guys 95 or above. A lot of guys 90-95. Then some higher level 3 stars.

Not really seeing what top level guys we’re getting this year.

We are down 2-4 points on total average if we are looking at stars depending on what year you look at, but that is with 5-6 commits.

I feel like 2-4 points would be a big deal.

4 points is the difference between Bama’s class last year and the back end of the top 10. (Which seems like a significant gap)

2 ish points was the difference between Bama and us in the 2020 class.

I know it’s early. But I asked the other day if there were big targets we were in on and Jonesy said not really. So I don’t really see our average really picking up much. I’m not sitting here panicking but it is an area of concern. We can make all the excuses we want but at the end of the day, it’s not exactly what you want to see at this point even this early.

If it turns out Harsin is a great developer though, it probably won’t be an issue. We’ll take underrated guys and have them perform and recruiting will likely tick up if that happens anyways.

Also full disclosure, I don’t follow nearly as closely as I used to. So I’m just going off the glances of targets i see when I pop in here.

It could be a big deal. I was just throwing out info.

I don't feel our average will jump considerably. I think we end up in the high 88-89 range average.

Development definitely is the big equalizer. We really struggled with development the last decade in my opinion outside of a select few.

There is good indication that we have some good developmental building coaches. At least I sure hope so.
I kind of expected some struggles early with recruiting. Harsin has to prove some things to the recruiting base he is now in. I am willing to give him time which is why I am not going to waste energy getting concerned right now.

Admittedly I am taking jabs at my fellow Aubies who are concerned and sharing it repeatedly with just about every post they make.

I reserve the right to join the masses at a later date though.

“We’re going to get families and players that are going to feel [Auburn],” Harsin said. “There will also be guys we bring into this program and people are going to go, ‘Where the hell this guy come from?’ This program, how we develop our players, this culture, and the people in the program are going to be what helps build the ability to sustain success.” -Bryan Harsin Auburn Head Coach, Prophet

I do. I think Harsin knew coming in that he was not going to set the league on fire with recruiting wins going up against the big dogs currently dominating recruiting.

So he is saying it comes with hard work, a culture built from the ground up, and hopefully w/ workouts, mental strength on the field, and development of those 'who the hell is this guy' players.

Once he does that, then maybe he can bring us up to better levels of recruiting.

My assessment is Harsin will choose players based on an evaluation that has been used by Koetter, Hawkins, Peterson, and Harsin to get guys some overlook and they develop into a productive player. Just my take after reading the article that came from.

Thanks for doing the recruiting thread Jones. As someone who doesn’t follow recruiting closely/not frequent poster, I really do appreciate your work in this thread.

That's what Tub was outstanding at.

I honestly could care less about the * system. There was a kid a while back from here who committed to bama. He was rated as the #9 overall recruit in the nation. He wasn't the best player on his own team. He never did anything at bama except get kicked out of school. Give me a guy who fits your system and who has not hit his ceiling yet. Star system be damned.

I will agree with this, while talent is great, developing that talent is even more important. We signed the #1 kid a few years ago (Cowart) and he was one of the biggest busts we had.

Stars are over hyped and overrated, as a kid dominating against smaller kids or just in camps doesnt always translate to playing in the SEC.

Everybody has underrated players. If we think we can bring 3* players and compete with bama, clemson, uga and lsu then you are going to be wrong. The rating services are not always right but they are right more than wrong. We have talent to win 10 games I hope we do.
