Auburn needs pass rushers.

I read on AuburnUndercover that, as of now, the feeling around Auburn is that Carl Lawson AND Montravius Adams would likely come back next year, which is possible but seems unlikely.

BUCK: Carl Lawson
DT: Montravius Adams
DT: Dontavius Russell
DE: Byron Cowart

That would be a solid starting 5. One of the best in the SEC if all continue to improve.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this statement should be retired until something actually happens.

I feel like we've been saying this since Fairley left

Auburn needs pass rushers.

We need pass rush not necessarily "pass rushers" as stereotyped (super fast DE a la Lawson/Garrett etc).

If we can get someone to take on Adams' 2gap DT role, we should get better interior pass rush from Montravius Adams (explanation below). Also, our DE production should be drastically improved as well. We don't need elite pass rushers, just guys who can create pressure

Why Montravius Adams is having a statistically disappointing year

Basic DL play explanation:

Traditional DL play has 1gap/2gap styles of play. In a 1 gap scheme, DL have 1 gap of responsibility and often asked to shoot gap and penetrate. In a 2gap system, DL engage blocker, read play and react being able to leverage blocker into clogging play gap on runs or opening gaps for blitzes.

What Auburn does:

Muschamp runs a combo system along the front, effectively utilized by Seattle/New England in the NFL. Typically for DTs that means, one DT is a 1gap player who gets after it, the other is a 2gap player who requires a double team/ stuffs the run.

Right now, Montravius Adams is the only DT we have on the roster who can play the 2gap DT role effectively. That means that instead of doing what everyone wants him to do, which is be Nick Fairley, he is playing a Terrence Cody role of stuff the run sometimes get the QB.

TL;DR of above post

If we can get a bigger run stuffing DT, Montravius Adams will have the opportunity to play a Nick Fairley type DT. Right now, Montravius Adams is stuck out of position doing grunt work because our DT depth sucks

They don't even have to be massive run stuffers as long as they can get off their damn blocks

I doubt it. My guess is Arizona State.

Our OT will be 3* JUCO Demetri Moore

He is the No. 1 athlete in the 247Sports rankings.

With Franklin's commitment, the Tigers move up to No. 17 in the recruiting team rankings.

Especially in a combo front though, 2gap DT will get double teamed and when you are pancaked/removed from play getting off block doesn't do much. Outside the freak talents, very few DTs 295 and below (our DTs) can play the position.

"getting off the block" is for the other DT playing 1 gap. If you are engaged as a 1gap DT you already failed

Really, 2Gap DTs rarely should have to "get of block" if done properly (unless runner is Mark Sachez running into OL). When one on one, DT reads and moves laterally with OL to seal play gaps. When double teamed, he just needs to ensure he maintains position and keeps double team engaged.

In the one on one situation, RB should recognize this and redirect by bouncing outside/cutback into non designed gap.

In double team situation, this should leave a LB free to meet RB in the hole which for most teams is a positive, for us

Wrong. Different WR position than them.

He will compete for the spot Rico has now.

F that just put people on the field who can get open and catch the ball. That makes no sense if we are in a 3 WR there is no way they all need such a specific skill set and even if they did they aren't producing so put in somebody who might.

The fire Richt talk can't hurt. We need to beat UGA to help us with a number of recruits.

It all depends on if they fire Richt and who they hire if they do.

Slot vs outside WR skill sets are standard at all levels of football.

We have 2 outside WRs and 1 inside WR. Guys can play both but typically they fit one better than the other
