Interesting tidbit. Apopka HS, where Cox and Ivey go to school, has a rule that when players commit then the recruiting process is completely over. No calls, no visits to schools besides the committed school, no nothing.
What an absurd rule. That's not in the best interests of the player.

Long term, it absolutely is. You're teaching the young men to teach this decision as a major, life-changing event and to truly pick the school you're set on going to and to not commit until that time.

The kid could always just wait to commit...

Please complete your thought process, how is the rule absurd and not in the kids best interest? To teach young men that their word means something? That if you know where you want to go, as a student athlete you should still be hounded by other schools coaches trying to get you to change your mind? That once you make that call your focus can then be placed 100% on the team you still play for? This is part of the problem with the culture today that these kids don't understand "commitment". I'm not opposed to guys visiting around and making sure they know where they are going but do that then make an "informed" decision with the help of parents, grandparents, coaches, etc... Is that opinion "old fashion"? Sure is but some others have the same opinion as I do, including the head coach at Apopka, i guess.

I 100% agree with you from the kid's side of learning how to be a man. The problem is cutting ties with other schools and then having a school pull the offer last minute and they are screwed. Something like the kid that Saban pulled the offer to the night before/or morning of signing day and he ended up signing with Arkansas. If the kid cut ties and burned bridges by dodging calls then he was completely and utterly screwed.

Forcing a kid to stay committed to a school teaches the kid nothing. Also the school can't really enforce the rule after football season is over.

In that case, you have to assume that the coach has done his due diligence with whatever coaching staff his player is committing to. This coach seems pretty no-nonsense and I'm sure he'd have spoken face to face with Saban at some point regarding his player.

How so? It teaches him that his decisions have consequences and he needs to be sure of his decisions before making them. How is that even debatable?

Regarding enforcement, you're right. BUT, the kid has lost 3-4 months of recruiting from August until November.

"You can't make me!"

ETA: Not meant at you personally 25, just that line of thinking.

KK this is exactly why it is debatable, unfortunately, and shows where the problem lies. These young guys have little to no sense of responsibility for choices they make. (I am agreeing with you if that's not clear) I assure all you guys questioning the bridge burning, that every coach that sets foot on campus at Apopka knows the rules. My guess is if they (the college coach) burn a kid at that school he will not be welcome back, as long as the head coach is still on campus.

Reality is, in situations like this, everything is usually very controlled by the HS Coach. So there is no even calling the recruit by colleges. It's usually all calls go through the HS HC and any deviation from that by college coaches result in damaged relationships with that HS and thus hurts a college's chances of getting recruits from that school later.

A college that does that probably never gets to set foot on campus at Apopka again.

Any head coach worth his salt wouldn't want that to happen.

So is Jonathan Calvin committed or is Gus not taking his commitment?

I would bet money if the coach makes that rule he plays a major part in ensuring the kid makes a responsible decision. Also just imagine it pushes kids to take longer to make a decision and ensure it is right instead of a knee jerk commitment

Someone tweeted that Tyler Queen had a rough day with accuracy at the elite 11 camp today

A writer from Ohio State's SBNation website (@MilesLGHL) just about a minute ago said that he was one of the best QBs there. Guess there's some differing opinions.

They could have all been inaccurate and he just hit a few more than the others.

Barton Simmons on Queen

"Tyler Queen is a heavy looking kid but he still has surprisingly quick and active feet. He also at first glance has one of the strongest arms here."
