Tuscaloosa isn't exactly getting out IMO. Do it right like Kwon Alexander and GET OUT!

I'd agree with this but for some reason the local kids want to leave Au all the time

Eta; I do think that we land Evans

Can you explain how bama can have a rule that goes against the NCAA?

if a player is on scholarship, the scholarship should count against the 85....correct?

It doesn't go against the NCAA.

It's a university-wide scholarship that is awarded outside of any athletic stipulations.

So, the player in question is not on "athletic scholarship."

However, this specific type of financial aid falls in line with other non-football scholarships in that if the player in question ever plays in a game, he automatically starts counting towards the 85-athletic scholarship limit.

Grandfathered in. But as soon as he plays, he counts towards 85. It's the Bryant scholly.

Think of it like a baseball/track/whatever player trying out for the football team.

He can be on the team, practice with the team, and dress out at games, but as long as he doesn't see action on the field, his scholarship doesn't count as a "football" scholarship.

However, the second he steps on that field while the clock is running, he becomes a scholarship football player and counts against the 85.

It's a scholarship not related to the player's athletic achievements (or lack thereof). Hundreds of regular students have gone to UA on Bryant scholarships and not played football. If one of those students chooses to walk on, the NCAA has to rule about whether or not he was a "recruited athlete". If the player was not recruited, he will never count against the 85.

In Holcombe's case, he is clearly a recruited athlete and he'll begin counting against the 85 immediately. AFAIK there is no precedent for whether or not he counts against the SEC's 25 player class cap, but I assume he will not.

The key is that its a scholarship the dude would have been eligible for whether he played football or not. That's what makes it different from a booster just handing out cash to walk-ons.

Hate to break it to the Bams but any football player on any kind of scholly counts against the 85 and 25. This in effect is the Bryant Rule so schools don't stockpile passed the 85 with players on nonathletic scholarships.

Also, if they have found a loophole it is closed if Holcombe signs any kind of NLI in February because NLIs automatically count to that years 25 limit.

Flipped his commitment from Miss State to Bama & in his own words "got my dream off today" = recruited. Should be no question about it.
