For DT, Unless the freshman is a clear cut starter for you and notjust competing/in the rotation, I
believe you should always RS the freshman. I am actually more pleased with Monty Adams RS unless reports said he looked like Fairley as a freshman

King and Flowers should all see the field the season with significant playing time.

We all knew about King but people seem to forget about Flowers. Flowers runs around a 4.5ish and is 6'2 225 LBs. If he was a HS recruit last cycle, people would have salivated over him

Adams needs the RS to get his body where it needs to be, make no mistake however, he will be a good one. Flowers was a star at Parkview in HS in GA. He just had academic issues and seems to have been on a grind. He has his grades and has put on some good muscle. King could push to start by mid-season IMO. And we all know about Lawson and Daniels.

I asked about Daniels a few weeks back. Everyone thought he was going to redshirt. Would be great to see him contribute right away

I am still holding out a very very small, thin, minute sliver of hope that Craig Sanders will show up.

But I have all but lost hope

Players are saying that Daniels is showing out at a level near Carl Lawson during captain's practices fwiw

I was one of those that thought Daniels and Adams would redshirt. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I did not really have any idea when I posted that. I just knew that he was a 5* guy and all the talk had been about the beast that is Carl Lawson. It would be unreal to get two winners out of that class that could help our DLine immediately.

I would not have thought Monty would have redshirted. Its not like we are insanely deep at DT. If he is mean, let him play. If he ends up being a 3 and out guy, we dont need to lose a year with him

Will be interesting

keep in mind, we're a week away from putting pads on, and the coaches haven't even seen the players practice yet... the decision to RS someone like Daniel is a ways away.

with that said, we are thin at DE (more so than tackle)... and it's probably easier to make an immediate impact coming off the edge than playing inside.

ETA: with regards to Adams, it wouldn't surprise me if he takes the redshirt in order to reshape his body. He's probably gotta drop a good bit of bad weight over the next few months in order to add muscle (similar to what we saw with Ben Bradley's tweet this week, dropping 30 LBs in 7 months).

Keep in mind that workouts are different for RS players during the season than non RS players. If he is on the same playing field as our other DTs, he by definition wouldn't be contributing a whole lot and missing out. RS players go through RS workouts that are designed to be extremely grueling and intense. Most RS players wouldn't be able to play at the highest levels on Saturday because they are so sore and have been pushed all week. Guys who aren't on redshirts can't work out heavily Th/Fr before a game and generally have to recover Sun-Tues so next thing you know, they dont see performance gains from working out. That is why everyone develops in the summer and not in the season (except for RS)

This is an excellent point and one that I had not thought of.

This should not surprise anybody. Daniels was a 5* on the composite til the last update a couple weeks before NSD. Looks like a combo of Rivals and Scout is why he lost his 5th*

He was cutting it close IIRC in regards to academics. Not sure if that is the reason Scout/Rivals dropped him but either way, we got him thanks to CRG and his vast network of recruiting connections. CRG =

Talk with RS players about RS workouts, you will hear more bitching in the next 5 minutes than you deserve to hear in a lifetime

I figured they worked out but never pieced together why RS years were important until they explained them. I was told that while most players don't want to RS coming in, the majority of the freshman who burned their RS year to play on special teams (Jonathan Jones for example), were displeased when they realize they are wasting time to get better to minimally contribute compared to their replacement.

Burning of our athlete's redshirt years just to play 3 plays a game on special teams is also half the reason Jay Boulaware had good special teams units. Another reason I hated/hate Jay Boulaware

That was Gene's philosophy. He carried it over with him from Iowa State where Jay was with him. Hard to blame him for that.

And this was just an observation, not trying to nitpick your feelings about Jay. I wasn't a fan either really

All good. I see how that definitely is a HC decision. I do believe that as a ST Coordinator though, you have input.

Just let me blame Boulaware. haha

Seriuosly though, Boulaware benefitted from this which is not standard at every school. He was a greatly overratted special teams coordinator.
