The performance of the receivers hasn’t been great through four games. Starters have consistently dropped passes, as the Auburn wideouts have dropped nine passes through four games. The Auburn passing game has never taken off, as Bo Nix struggled and was replaced by T.J. Finley on Saturday.
Bryan Harsin, nor Cornelius Williams, recruited any of these wideouts to Auburn. It is interesting that Williams is being replaced by a former Harsin assistant and someone that undoubtedly has Harsin’s trust.
The other issue plaguing the receiver position has been alignment and spacing. Harsin has specifically mentioned that aspect of the offense on multiple occasions. It’s been clear for nearly two months that Harsin’s detail-oriented approach was focused on the development of that position, and the development wasn’t up to Harsin’s standards.
However, sources have told Auburn Live that Harsin, and possibly Mike Bobo to some extent, believed “they had to fire someone.” There certainly seems to be an element of panic in this decision. If you’re able to fire Williams after four games, certain he isn’t a good fit, then the hire itself is largely in question.
Having said all that, sources have told Auburn Live that Williams was considered a good coach on the staff and understood the scheme.
Displeasure with the coaching at a position four games into the season normally doesn’t result in firing a coach. It certainly appears something happened during or after Auburn’s loss at Georgia State that sparked this decision happening when it did.

I can agree with that.

This seems panicky. Unless there's something else going on, like the guy just flat out disagrees with what Harsin wants to do.
It's not his fault if the receivers can't catch the ball.

Literally his job is routes and catching. If he puts receivers on the field that can't catch then it is on him.

Are you telling me that a D1 receiver coach has to teach guys that he didn't recruit how to catch a football? I could catch one when I was six years old. I mean what the frick is he supposed to do, tell them to use their hands?
Route running is something different. But I'm talking about drops.

I get what you’re saying, but he didn’t recruit these guys and it’s been 4 games. I’m not going to worry too much about this firing, but I think the poor WR play isn’t solely on him.

The WRs have also had issues lining up correctly. I think the technique things like that would probably be a bigger concern from a coaching perspective.

Dude was given 8 months in a COVID offseason to clean up years of underperforming wide receiver play.
I may be wrong and the next guy may get the most out of the receivers, but I just can’t comprehend how more people don’t find this premature

There has to be more to it. I hope it's not that "they had to fire someone."

No chance in hell Harsin fired someone just to fire someone.
This is a $600,000 decision for the athletic department.

The WR productivity isn't there, but seriously there must be some things behind the scenes to fire someone four games in. Like Williams wasn't working hard enough in some facet. Who knows.

I’m with you, skyler. Harsin owns this hiring/firing each and every way. But he’s gotta know this isn’t working in a way that we don’t

Thinking it over yeah this doesn’t look great on Harsin. We are desperate for good play but don’t think Williams was the problem.
