With the combine coming up soon, figured I'd start an offseason discussion.

In general, I don't see a way where they can fill the holes necessary to become a playoff team. If they miss out again, I would have to believe that DQ is gone.

Would anyone be against bringing in Eric Bieniemy? I was secretly hoping he'd slip through the cracks during this carousel cycle. then when Mel Tucker left Colorado, I had suspicions that they would go after EB, but it looks Sarkisian might be the frontrunner there.

I think EB would be a huge hit with the fanbase in Atlanta. I like the idea of going with an offensive minded coach. With the defensive coaches (Smith and Quinn), if the OC is good they leave for a HC job. If they suck then they get fired and replaced. Either way, you are constantly changing coaches, playcallers, and schemes. With an offensive coach, as long as the team is winning you are assured of keeping that system which allows the QB a certain level of comfort that Ryan hasn't had for most of his career.

Also, if successful and around for a bit, we would have a coach that could search for and draft the next QB that HE wants for his system. I think next year has to be the year, though. I don't see EB lasting another cycle without getting a HC offer.

I wanted him this offseason.

Some roster turnover is coming this year. Here are some guys I don't think will be around next season:

Cut- Freeman, Bailey, Sambrailo, Stocker, Schaub

Gone in FA- Beasley (team has announced he won't be back), Hooper (priced himself out, not worth $10M+ per year IMO), Campbell

Potential cuts. I don't think these will happen but they would make financial sense- Mack, Trufant, Allen

The toughest call is what to do with Keanu Neal. He's a great player when healthy but he is coming off two serious injuries.

Dimitroff has screwed this team with bad contracts, especially the damn near fully guaranteed deal for Julio.

Team needs, IMO:

EDGE, DT, LB, CB, C/G, RB, TE

Potential draft targets:

1.16- K'Lavion Chaisson, AJ Epenesa, Yetur Gross-Matos. The theme here is pass rush. We need to fix that in a big way.

2.47- Damon Arnette, Patrick Queen, Tyler Biadasz. Arnette in this spot would be a steal. He would be a huge asset at corner and could allow the Falcons to cut Trufant post June 1. The more likely scenario is Trufant would be cut after 2020.

2.55- Cam Akers, Cesar Ruiz, Shane Lemieux. Akers would step in and be the immediate Freeman replacement. Ruiz or Lemieux could play guard until Mack is cut, probably after 2020, and then shift to center.

I would like to see the Falcons try and trade for Darius Slay but I don't think we can afford his salary.

Falcons can't even lose right. How that shitty season ended up with second in division and fifth toughest overall schedule next year is baffling.

Falcons are going to let Hooper and Campbell test the market. That sounds like a precursor for them leaving.

We just have too much money tied up in the wrong positions. Paying hooper would have only added to that. Hooper is a fine TE but not highest paid TE level good. With Ridley and Julio both on the field, theoretically any decent TE should do what we need which is be Ryan’s safety option.

New uniforms/logo are coming in April right? I assume they are going back with the retro Falcon logo? Possible silver pants? Are they trying to go for a UGA look or something?

I like both of those guys. I'd really like to see Campbell stay of the 2.

I like them both too although I do think Hooper padded stats in garbage time last year. If he's going to reset the TE market, it needs to happen elsewhere. He isn't Kelce or Kittle but is going to be paid like he is.

Campbell is a good player as well and will not be easy to replace. I expect at least three draft picks addressing the front seven on defense and a fourth addressing the secondary.

With the news that Yannick Ngakoue wants out of Jacksonville, I have a trade idea. It would require the Falcons to tag Hooper and the Jags to tag Ngakoue:

Falcons get: Yannick Ngakoue
Jaguars get: Austin Hooper, Falcons 4th round pick

Or:

Falcons get: Yannick Ngakoue, Jaguars 1st round pick (9th overall)
Jaguars get: Austin Hooper, Falcons 1st round pick (16th overall), Patriots second round pick (currently owned by Falcons, 55th overall)

Seems like he would be tough to afford. A tagged DE costs more than a tagged TE.

I agree. Kind of a pipe dream on that one.

Once we find out if the players vote in the new CBA, Thursdayish, the real wheeling and dealing will begin.

Sambrailo gone too.

Trufant and Freeman are still solid football players but they had bloated contracts that needed to be gone.

Are Trufant and Freeman cut now or June 1st

Pre June 1 Cut
Trufant-10.2 dead, 4.95 savings
Freeman-6.0 dead, 3.5 savings

Post June 1 Cut
Trufant-4.4 dead, 10.75 savings
Freeman-3.0 dead, 6.0 savings

If this is all pre June 1st then our front office probably fricked up. 18.2 dead and 8.45 savings vs 7.4 dead and 16.75 savings.

Not sure yet.

Austin Hooper just signed with the Browns. They're paying him more than Kelce or Kittle are making. Glad someone else let him reset the market.

Glad we didn’t go the Julio route with him. Can’t have all our money tied up on a few offensive players

I still think it was a mistake to go the Julio route with Julio.
