I really hope that door is still open if Mike doesn't succeed with this group. I think Beard would be a great fit. I know he has spent most of his coaching career in Texas. He probably wants the Texas job if Smart doesn't get it done.

There should be more to show for it by now.
Again, let's see how Tech plays out this year. Haven't really beaten anyone and are super young.
Their run was great last year, no doubt and it's a real shame we haven't put one together but barring the first 2 seasons and the 16-16 season, at least we've all been legit excited about basketball each year. For now, I'll take that.
Look I'm with you. Just saying we're a few wins here and there from things looking completely different.
Has it gone the way we thought? Not quite but based on where we were before and where we are in football, I'm not going to get greedy.
Trying to find some passion and enjoyment out of Razorback sports anywhere I can.
Keep in mind I was 5 rows behind the foul ball this year in Omaha.

Probably not, I can see that you are reasonable and not stuck on the hate train.
I just can't stand the people on both sides that won't budge no matter what happens. Even though I probably seem more pro-Mike than anything else, I won't be complaining if he is fired. He has had his chances and you can argue he got unlucky in some cases but that is how the college basketball works, every coach deals with it.

quote:How is that a valid response to what you quoted? They've already been to the elite 8. They could be complete cheeks this year and it wouldn't even matter. The point is it took Beard a whopping 2 years to outperform Mike at a lesser program.
Again, let's see how Tech plays out this year.
I like Mike. Great guy with great ties to the program and he brings a lot of nostalgia to the court. I want him to win. I really do, but I want the Hogs to win more. When I see prime coaching talent get plucked right out of the fricking UA system because we as a program became content with 1st and 2nd round exits only for that coach to go on to a nothing program and instantly make it a more nationally relevant program than U of A (Tech has Duke on the OOC schedule this year), it pisses me off.

I see what you are saying but Beard is the real deal. That being said, I don't think he will fit well at a blue blood school.

Drew UNC both years we won in the first round, had we won those games, and had 2 sweet 16s, literally no one would be saying a word. Literally 2 games.
The same people bitching right now would just move the goalposts like they always do. They have an irrational hatred for Mike and want a white coach. They blame Nolan for us getting Stan Heath because "we had to hire a black."

That's extreme.
Some of the doubt is valid but given where we were with Heath and Pelphrey, you go with Mike every time.

If they fall flat this year and don't make the NCATT then it turns into a different conversation is my point.
Not that they will but one run into the NCAAT doesn't transcendentally prove it one way or the other.
Yeah he did it with UALR too, but another senior laden team.
Let's see him build and sustain before we crown him the next best thing.

but given where we were with Heath and Pelphrey

Going to be a long while before he leaves Tech. The biggest reason he left UNLV for Tech is because his daughter is there with her mother. That’s probably THE reason he took that job instead of holding steady at a G5 school and waiting on a higher profile P5 gig.

Okay, include the 6 years or so before Heath if you want.
I agree, we could turn this program around with the right hire, but we've also shown two different times out of the last 3 that we totally shite the bed.
If Mike misses 2 years in a row, they'll can his arse, but he's not going anywhere at this rate, even if they make the NIT this year, we're stuck with him for another.

He also has history with Texas Tech coaching wise. It was a smart move to leave UALR while he was hot either way. It was probably going to take another two years or so to make a run like that again imo. I thought I read somewhere about his big interest in Texas and that would be his dream job but not sure.

quote:That's perfectly fine with me. I want him to have his shot with this roster. It's perfect for him and they're producing early. It is 100% on him if this roster doesn't do something notable. Too much talent all over the court to not accomplish something.

And you said Mike should have been able to turn our program around with one recruiting class. He couldn't process any players due to APR. Did you forget that or are you just lying to make your argument sound better?

Football is the sport that takes time. There are 85 players on the roster so obviously you aren't just going to come in and replace everyone.
Basketball takes one recruiting class. Sometimes even just one recruit.
What did you mean by this then?

quote:That it's WAY easier to turn a basketball roster around than it is a football roster? So the "It takes time" argument holds less water in basketball. Given circumstances you can come into a new year with basically a brand new team in basketball. The point wasn't and never has been that he should have done it in 1, it's that he should have done more before 9.
What did you mean by this then?

So you think a basketball program can get turned around with one class, or even one player, but you're not applying that line of thinking to Mike?
He still hasn't turned the program around? Just give it a rest man.
