Chad Morris, and this will be the only year to have a shot at him. He can recruit Texas players extremely well, as he was once president of the Texas High School Coaches Association, and he is the architect of the offense that Clemson runs. This should be the guy.

Chad Morris will be at A&M next season if he has reasonable success this year. He's an alum and that job will almost certainly be open after this season.

Defensive first coach with a Big Ten pedigree. Do not want.

Shaw and Fitzgerald aren't coming, and I don't want Holgorsen.

We need to go offensive and from the G5/mid-major ranks for this next hire. My top 5, in no particular order, is:

Chad Morris
Philip Montgomery
Scott Frost
Mike Norvell
Bryan Hardin (longshot)

proven head oaches are overrated.

a guy who has won at places is not coming here to prove shite he's oming here to get a retirement check.

petrino we lucked out on because he left the NFL and had to prove he was still a good coach.

i want an up and coming coach that is hungry

Agreed.

The problem with proven head coaches is lack of adaptability, which can swallow you up in a conference like the SEC. They can get stubborn and stick in their ways, with the mentality of "it worked at my old job so why should I change?" We've seen it firsthand with Bielema and his various philosophies on recruiting and roster management, speed, and strength and conditioning that harkened back too much to his Big Ten days.

The hope is that a coach from the mid-majors who's hungry and is stepping into an SEC job is cognizant of the stage and knows that he needs to adapt his methodology somewhat in order to obtain and sustain success.

Just head a short distance west....

Philip Montgomery: 6-7, 10-3, 1-1 at Tulsa.
2015-Present: HC Tulsa
2012-2014: OC Baylor
2008-2011: Co OC/QB/RB Baylor
2005-2007: Co OC/QB/RB Houston
2003-2004: QB/RB Houston
Hometown: Dallas, TX

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane have hired Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery to be their next football coach.

Montgomery has been calling the plays for one of the most prolific offenses in college football. Baylor is the only team in FBS to be ranked in the top four in the country in total offense each of the last four seasons.

The Bears averaged 48.8 points and 581.3 yards per game this season under Montgomery, who just completed his seventh season and also served as the quarterbacks coach.

quote:

After winning six games in his first year, Montgomery’s second team took a giant leap by posting a 10-3 record, finishing in second-place in the American Athletic Conference West Division and claiming a 55-10 victory in the 2016 Miami Beach Bowl. The 2016 Tulsa squad finished the season among the nation’s best for total offense (527.0), scoring offense (42.5), rushing offense (261.7) and passing (265.3). The Hurricane ranked 4th for total offense, 7th for scoring, 8th for rushing and 30th for passing.

Tulsa’s offense also established NCAA history in 2016, becoming the first team in FBS/DI with a 3,000-yard passer (Dane Evans), two 1,000-yard rushers (James Flanders and D’Angelo Brewer) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Keevan Lucas and Josh Atkinson).

Tulsa established 11 individual school records on offense a year ago, including nine career records, one single-season and one single-game record. It was also an offense that set a school record with eight 300+ rushing games.

quote:

In his career, Montgomery has tutored several award-winning quarterbacks, including Big 12 Player of the Year Bryce Petty, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, Baylor All-American Nick Florence, Conference USA MVP Kevin Kolb and Houston standout Case Keenum.

At Tulsa, quarterback Dane Evans became the school’s all-time passing, total offense and TD passes leader in 2016 under Montgomery’s tutelage.

Following Baylor's record-breaking 2013 Big 12 championship season, Montgomery was honored as the Offensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com and was named a finalist for the Broyles Award given to the nation's top assistant. In 2011, Montgomery was named the National Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Rivals.com and was the Quarterback Coach of the Year by SpeedTracs/FootballScoop.com.

Montgomery called plays for an offense ranked among the nation's top two in each of his final four seasons at Baylor. In 2014, Baylor’s 581.3 yards per game and 48.8 points lead the nation. The Bears led the nation in total offense in 2013 (618.8) and ranked second in both 2012 (572.2) and 2011 (587.1). Baylor's passing attack has ranked among the top five in that same span –– fifth in both 2014 (346.2) and 2013 (359.1) and fourth in both 2012 (340.5) and 2011 (351.5).

For three straight seasons at Baylor, each with a different quarterback, Montgomery's pupils earned All-America honors. In 2013, junior Petty joined the list after throwing for 4,200 yards and 32 TDs. Petty finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named the unanimous Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Under Montgomery's guidance, Florence threw for a school-record 4,309 yards in 2012 and was named an honorable mention All-American by Sports Illustrated. As backfield coach in 2011 Montgomery coached two All-Americans -- in addition to mentoring RG3, the most prolific quarterback in school history who set 54 school records, he also tutored future NFL draftee Terrance Ganaway, who set Baylor single-season records for rushing yards (1,566) and rushing TDs (21).

The Bears finished the 2011 season with a 10-3 record, including a memorable 67-56 Alamo Bowl win over Washington, and ranked 12th (Coaches) and 13th (AP) in the final national polls. The 2011 Baylor offense set or tied 101 offensive school records.

I don't believe he is a candidate but he fits the J. Long criteria that the poster suggested.

i would take pat and Dana but not really feeling Shaw. I'm tired of seeing a pro style offense. If also take leach or Gundy. Bring on the air raid!

Fitzgerald and Shaw aren't even remotely realistic candidates so no worries on those two, if you don't like them.

Neither was BB at the time. I threw those names out there because they are out of left field like the last 2 hires.

There is also another possibility that is not being talked about. If Neil Brown has another season like he did last year he could potentially be a good hire. He runs the same offense The Pirate runs and has ties to Texas. He was the OC at Texas Tech for a couple of years when Tubberville was coach. He was also the OC at UK before becoming the HC at Troy.

I see your point but Bielema wasn't coaching at his alma mater like both of those guys are.
