Whew. Now go get Norvell.
Agreed.
Gus was my #1, but I was extremely reticent to give Saban level money and control to him. I wasn’t exactly thrilled to have a coach who would have unconditional support from a faction of our fan base from the outset.

You're damn right we did.
I am very grateful that some of my peeps still have a lot of pull up there.

He wasn't my first choice, or second to be honest, but I'd have taken him if we had landed Gus. Mostly, right now, I just want to land someone decent before they all disappear from the market.

If I had sat down and made a list of 100 candidates Gus wouldn't be on it anywhere.
That's how I knew he'd never be here.

Been saying from the get-go that Gus wouldn't happen here. Don't know if the media was being fed BS, making up BS on behalf of Gus, or if the people I was talking to were being fed BS, but I have reason to believe it was never as solid as some have made it out to be. I'm not even positive we offered him that lucritive deal that's being reported, but there was definite contact made to gauge interest.
I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in between like always.

If you had to best guess who it is now, who?
Norvell?

Gus was definitely interested. This was no get a raise moment.

That's what I'm hearing for the most part, but there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding it.
He and Kiffin would be my personal 1a and 1b, but the feeling is that Kiffin is off the board now. There's still another supposed candidate out of left field, then Morris and Venables remain (in that order, respectively).

He was interested in the same way you or I would be interested in another job offer for a tougher position and slightly better pay at a new company. Of course you hear them out and see what they/their company can potentially offer you that your current one can't, but you wouldn't take a harder job along with the major change in your life if the opportunity wasn't THAT much better.
This is especially true now that AU renegotiated his contract and gave him an extension. It was never ALL about "coming home" like everyone made it out to be; he has enough money that he can own a house in every corner of the state, a private jet at his disposal, and it isn't like northeast AL is across the country or a completely different culture than home.

Business is business, and home is home. Gus should have never let it get this far to turn down his home state when Auburn countered. Another school, sure, then it's just business. I guess I see the light now on why so many of you were so adamantly opposed to his hiring.
Feeling a little embarrassed that I was this naive. I haven't lived in Arkansas for 20 years, but it is still home. I can't imagine a situation where I would do what he just did.

He’s always been a top shelf POS.
That much was clear during the mustain fiasco.

I want Venables or Neal Brown.

People quickly forget the Dyer and Cam stuff.
That program with filthy back then and you’d be naive to think much has changed.

Don't forget though we turned him down first. He was an SEC caliber head coach and we said no thanks in 2013. Also don't forget that we will eat our own if they don't deliver (see Nutt). It's a two way street and can be a nasty game.

He was interested if Auburn wouldn't pony up. The Malzhans are all about the Malzahns.
