Age and perspective are funny things. The term "throwback" made me laugh and realize how old school I am. For me, the DMAC unis are not throwback at all. They are our unis. Sure, we went through our fastpitch softball phase there for a few years, but now we're back to a uniform a real football team wears.

Those unis and the grass are the only things from the Morris debacle worth keeping.

I wonder if he explained to AU how they weren't performing well, or else he wouldn't be there
I actually expect him to be reasonably successful there. All the systems and structures are already in place. Heck, even the offense is already in place and doesn't require a full overhaul. He can make a few tweaks and look like a genius. I could even be happy for him if it wasn't freaking Auburn.
I've never seen anyone in so far over their head as he was here.

Kiffin is the closest thing to a 2008 Bobby Petrino hire, IMO.
In every possible way. Strong hire? Check. Will be successful in short amount of time? Check. Will end in disaster? Check.
re: All these players decommiting

We were going to lose a lot of those recruits even if we kept Morris, not to mention more player transfers at the end of the year. The right coach will salvage some of these decommits, bring some of their commits along, and keep transfers to a minimum. We'll survive. Probably won't be a banner year by any means, but a good coach will hopefully minimize the damage.

I'm honestly kind of surprised people point to Kentucky as the game this year that cemented their opinions on Morris and what he could do here. It was SJSU for me. Never expected them to beat Kentucky or anyone else in conference after that.
Yeah it was totally Kentucky for me. Not sure I can explain why, except that maybe I convinced myself SJSU was a fluke. Going into Kentucky, coming off a bye and a solid outing against A&M... the game seemed perfectly set up for us to take a significant step up, get our first SEC win, start establishing a new identity. I was done with Morris when that didn't happen.
To this day, I still say this team was/is fully capable of beating UK and should have won that game. The talent is there. I won't be shocked if Lunney gets this thing turned around and we beat Mizzou.

Are you referencing an article? Is that your opinion?
The main point (I think) was the dramatic transition Brandon made with good coaching, with which I can fully agree. Whether Brandon was the worst ever early in his career is just hyperbole.
Man I will never forget Brandon vs Dak and Brandon vs Kelley (Ole Miss) in Brandon's senior year. He really was an elite college QB at that point.
I also agree that Starkel has all the tools and could be so much better with good coaching. Would love for him to have a good senior year somewhere, maybe even here.

Is there an advantage to a player entering the portal now as opposed to waiting until the season is over? Genuinely curious... I don't fully understand the transfer rules.
Shout out to Ben Hicks

I thought he made some great passes after Starkel's injury. I also thought his scramble on 3rd and forever at the end of the game showed his toughness and put us in a position to convert on fourth down. He played really well.
re: Trey Knox is an absolute beast - size, power, speed, finesse, toughness

I agree the potential is there. The pieces are in place at RB, TE, QB and WR, given some time to develop. Can the O-line step up? Can we correct the mental errors, dumb hole mistakes and poor play calling from Saturday? That stuff is hard to accept in year 2.
The plays where Starkel nailed Knox and O'Grady when they weren't looking for the ball... they were frustrating because they show the timing issues and not being on the same page... BUT... the quickness of his release and the precision Starkel showed were so impressive. He's nailing guys in the shoulder pads while they're on the move and he's got pressure in his face. Maybe he'll plant one in their facemask this week .

Arkansas led the country with 20 freshmen major contributors Petrinos first year. Chad is inheriting a situation more similar to what Nutt walked into that what Ford, Crowe, Petrino, or Bert walked into. Petrinos schedule his first year wasn't as easy as chad's and he was a blown call in the OM game and/or a blown FG against ms state from bowl eligibility.
Thanks for the reminders from that year, although I could have done without being reminded of the blown call against Nutt and Ole Miss... that one still stings. :yack: I had totally forgotten about all the freshmen Petrino had to play.
The comparison to what Nutt walked into makes sense.

As good of a coach as he was/is, Bobby Petrino went 5-7 here in his first year. How does the talent level of this team compare to the one Petrino inherited? Which coach will have had the easier schedule in that first year?
I'm generally optimistic. I can see 7 potential wins and would be ecstatic if Morris pulled that off. But then I think of Petrino's first year and think we'll be lucky to win 5.

re: All we had to do is catch a foul pop

Very true. I'm still not giving Larnach a 2-0 fastball to sit on. I would try a breaking ball over the inside part of the plate - even if he crushes it, it's most likely foul. Or maybe a fastball up (and out) of the zone to see if he'll bite. But I'm not grooving one. I'd rather start over with Rutschman and try to work ahead in the count (and I'd have probably gone to a righty in Larnach gets on).

When Cronin went 2-0 on Larnach, I was really hoping we would pitch around him, go off speed, try to get him to swing at something out of the zone instead of challenge him. That guy is a beast. Don't let him sit on a 2-0 fastball.
In that situation, I'm only going after Larnach after he goes fishing on that 2-0 pitch. If he doesn't, I'm putting him on and starting over with the next guy. That's ultra conservative, but that's how I would have played it.

Shoot - I'd take him at Arkansas. Proven winner, strong leader and would do well in a Morris offense. Granted, not a great passer, but I don't think we have anyone on campus with a better overall skill set :dunno:
Never happen, though.
