I know it's Irwin but I figured I'd try and drop a productive thread that doesn't turn into a Drewbie/Lat/Dale micro sword fight.

From the Rivals Bawd:

Basically talked about a conversation he had with HY during the basketball search in that a TON of big name coaches were actually interested in the job. One of which being Chris Beard who specifically said he would talk to HY after the national championship game.

Apparently this was a huge buzz kill for HY as he very much wants program builders and not job hoppers seeking stepping stones etc.

I know it's just Irwin but seems consistent with the HY mentality and how the Muss hire transpired.

Would certainly rule guys out like Kiffin and/or Freeze types. Definitely makes me wonder if HY would even consider Kiffin given what he said publicly about Muss. Those two just seem like polar opposites.

That actually does not make any sense.

It's two completely unrelated statement and somebody trying to connect them.

It's conjecture coming from someone that talked to him personally about his most recent coaching hire.

I didn't say anything otherwise did I?

You really think Kiffin's track record aligns with the types of statements HY has made publicly and his actions in hiring Musselman over others?

... he was disappointed that big name coaches were interested in the job?

I think the real point was that Hunter wanted a coach that was all in on being here at the moment. Not so much that he would never use the program as a stepping stone. At least that was the vibe I got from hearing it all. I think Kiffin is certainly in it if Hunter hears the right things regarding his plans for the program. I believe the other big point is he doesn't want a coach using leverage to get a better deal.

Well, it has been confirmed that he was very close to hiring Kiffin at Houston so not sure about that. Although the approach at Houston and Arkansas should be different.

I would say this part is the Irwin shuffle in this little blurb, because it doesn't make much sense. Taking Tech to the Elite 8, then the NC game is his 2nd and 3rd years is pretty much the definition of a program builder. And being willing to talk to the AD, after taking your team to the NC game, is pretty much the definition of displaying the desire to be the coach at Arkansas, rather than wherever they are. So if true, it makes me think less of HY, and worry more about our football search.

I can't really trust any of Irwin's takes, especially regarding anything that involves Texas Tech.

Eh just a re-tread with tons of baggage. Point being neither seem to be consistent with the Mussellman hire which I would agree with.

Just passing along other information from another board, I generally think Irwin is just hot air.

In all likelyhood, Kiffin could be announced December 15th.

He also said HY only wants guys who really desire to be at a school.

Lane Kiffin is a guy that really wants to be here.

Why did HY almost hire Kiffin at Houston then?

All indications lately are that Kiffin is the man to lead the Hogs next season.
