If Odom continues to play that base, bland 3 man front against LSU, I'm going to blow my lid.

Alabama heated up LSU's qb almost every time he was in obvious passing situations, and he shite the bed every time.

We'll see.

We absolutely must generate pressure and find a way to make the QB uncomfortable.

If counted correctly, State qb was 23/27 in the 2nd half. 85%

But it has everything to do with talent... Just talent alone, not a small change in scheme periodically to keep em off balance, or try anything on God's green earth other than the exact same thing over and over, etal.

Even a Miss State poster said, "You can show something other than the same thing all the time against bama"

Penalties are what fans should be upset with not the defensive or offensive scheme.

Defensive personnel and what those players can actually accomplish on the field will tell you why we can't bring pressure unless the occasional run blitz or bringing a nickel.

I’m not saying we run some all out constant blitz pressure defense but the occasional twist, stunt , zone blitz etc. wouldn’t kill us. We could still have 6 or 7 in zone and it’s not like teams don’t take the top off of us regardless. The shite we’ve been trying hasn’t really worked so is seeing if something else might be better such a bad thing?

The four down lineman vs Auburn didn't slow them down any.

Odom's scheme vs Leach is the reason we are 2-0 against him and the reason so many others are adapting to use something similar and forcing offenses to play short when they don't have the athletes to matchup man to man on defense.

not saying we need to go 4 down but maybe mix up the gaps we shoot every once in awhile? Again you don’t have to scrap the entire defense just show a few more wrinkles than we have been. As someone else said even people from other teams have noticed we do the exact same thing play after play. It doesn’t matter what defense you run if the offense can predict exactly where everyone in the defense is going to be they are going to pick you apart. And not to be an a-hole but the reason we’re 2-0 vs leach is because states kickers were both arse not because of anything special we did on defense. They threw for over 400 yards and over 85% completion percentage in the 2nd half.

Getting back to the data, a concern with the defense is the fact we appear to be doing worse in the second half than in the first half, which suggests that offenses are adjusting and we don't have a counterpunch. Grant Morgan said in the postgame PC Saturday that Mississippi State was able to find the holes in our zone about 10-15 yards up field and exploit them in the second half.

Score by quarter
Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
Arkansas 71 75 74 63
Opponents 28 51 53 62

Here's a breakdown of first half vs second half in terms of points given up against P5 opponents (defensive and ST TDs have been removed):

Team | 1H | 2H
Texas | 0 | 21
A&M | 3 | 7
UGA | 17 | 13
OM | 21 | 31
Aub | 14 | 17
MSU | 7 | 21

At the end of the day, at a macro level we're giving up more points in each quarter as the game progresses, and we've given up more points in the second half than in the first half in all but one of our games against P5 opponents (the lone exception being Georgia).

So looking at those numbers my take away is our offense is pretty stable at what it does always. But our defense gets progressively worse as the game goes on. Which means it could be depth or our inability to make adjustments.

I’m guessing both.

In view of the overall talent/depth level on the defensive side, I believe Odom is trying to do the best he can with what he's got and scheming the best he can. The results could be a lot worse, IMO. No, it's not a dominating defense, but how many dominant players are on that side of the ball? Not just good, but dominant? Two? Maybe three if you want to stretch the definition... And one of them is out for the season.

Was literally just about to edit my post after re-reading to highlight the fact that our offense is pretty consistent in terms of scoring per period, but I'll give you credit for it.

It's a far cry from the Bert years when both our offense and defense would power down in the second half, and an even further cry from the Morris years when neither group got off the damn bus.

When the defense is fresh, they held state scoreless in the first quarter and most of the second until the final seconds. I was at the game and they rotated the defensive line out, the secondary and only a few times with Henry and Pool. State started to wear down the defense in the second half and the linebackers rarely came out.

We all already know what the problem is and other teams will simply exploit it with superior numbers.

So you got your blitzes. Effective a few times but was why we gave up the one TD we did. Will need to do it again if we want any chance against Bama.

Yup. It was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. For the most part we played conservative but we weren't afraid to attack when it made sense.

We even saw some bad throws because of imagined pressure.
