Absolutely fascinating that the Fighting Illini are paying more (much more) for a HC than Arkansas... that they're willing to give it to Bert drops the jaw a bit.
That's fascinating, but if the overall coaching staff compensation is more (or even close) than Arkansas' then that will be concerning.
Nothing says "I'm not serious about this" more than having a coaching payroll that is glaringly less than your peers... much less some rust-belt also-ran program giving your old HC a raise.

Eh, we're in the top 20 nationally in terms of current assistant coaching salaries. The problem is that we're only 9th in the SEC . I guess paying for 3 head coaches at once will do that.
In all likelihood, the trade-off for Bert's salary is that he just handcuffed the program into hiring mid-level (at best) assistant coaches. Not that he can keep good assistant coaches around anyway.

So we should overpay for no results?
I think Yurachek is willing to pay for results.

We got in this Bielema payout because of no results and bad contracts.
We got into Chad because of bad contracts and negative results...
We will pay an OC or DC if they prove it.
I could see Odom/Briles getting an extension or pay bump before signing day.
I can see Pittman getting an extension with 8+ wins next year.

Also did Bert eat the whole salary and they will pay almost nothing for the assistants? Like other coaches in our past?

That's what you would hope... we don't necessarily need a HC way up there in pay, and the overall compensation for the staff is likely more important anyway for 95% of programs.

Exactly this. His Illinois contract may be peak college football coaching pay insanity

Chase Hayden going to play for Bert.

His time at East Carolina was a quick one.

I feel like he’s been in college even longer than TJ Hammonds.

Hayden has another two years so he could go somewhere else before he's out of eligibility.
