With Toney on board, I'm even more comfortable with Muss going hard at the kid from OU, Reaves. The rotation of 6'6" guards who can score would be exceptional.

After watching Muss' presser from today, he seems to value a player's defense as much or more than 3 point shooting for a player.

He said he obviously values the 3, hut he said the analytics showed that they won multiple games this season by having 2 great defenders on the court at any given time. He mentioned Justin Smith and Tate as those 2 guys, with Devo coming on late.

He said the Toney pickup helped fill that that void and his defense is part of the reason they liken him so much.

We made the elite 8 without a single player that could throw it in the ocean from the three point line. I like how Muss builds teams. He is proactive and forward thinking. He has no use for conventional thinking. We haven’t had a coach like that in football or basketball in a long time. I’m excited.

Most good to elite teams don't value the three as much because the percentages are lower trying to win game after game. They are good at defense, rebounding, winning the turnover margin and scoring points in the paint. Houston is another team that mirrors Arkansas in a lot of ways.

As long as you play good defense then that will still give you a chance to win even if the offense goes cold.

Also another stat that is overlooked is that this team is pretty decent at free throws and something Bama really needed against UCLA.

D is fine but we need someone at a minimum to come in at any time and fill it up. The rules are made for offense to excel now.

I really like the Camara kid from UGA think he would be a perfect replacement for Smith. Bouncy 6’8 with a slightly better 3 pt shot

Muss says he was on the phone until 12:30 AM and was up at 5 am. He's in transfer portal mode. He says don't believe everything you read about Arkansas being interested in a recruit.

Muss on the transfer portal

quote:

“My wife was not happy last night at all,” Musselman told reporters Thursday. “I was on the phone until about 12:30 last night and I got up at 5 this morning. It’s hard, I’m not going to lie to you.”

quote:

“We’ve had some Zooms and we’ll continue to have Zooms,” Musselman said. “We just want the right fit, and if you talk to players, you can get a feel for if it’s a good fit off the floor and on the floor. Again, I think that player that kind of plays that positionless basketball at times seems to be a great fit for us.”

quote:

“The evaluation part is really the most important part, especially with this many guys,” Musselman said. “You’ve got to clearly identify what your team needs and clearly identify what a player can do.

quote:

“Then we have statistical formulas that we’ve created - not any outside company - we’ve created internally from the last six years that we continue to build on, where we plug a player from one conference in and how do we project them as an SEC player. We had that down really well in the Mountain West and now we feel, after the last couple years, that the same formula can help us moving forward in the SEC.”

quote:

“For the bulk of the season, game one to the very end, Smith and Tate were our versatile defenders,” Musselman said. “So I think maybe on the outside you can look and maybe say, ‘Hey, add shooting,’ but in reality, we won a lot of games based on two guys being great, great defenders for us.”

quote:

“Don’t believe everything you read about the portal and who Arkansas is interested in,” Musselman said. “There’s a difference between making a phone call and interest. There’s a strategy behind it. Some players might get a call and there might not be real interest. It might just be an inquiry or smoke screen or whatever you want to call it.”

Toledo transfer Marreon Jackson told me that he has cut his list to four. One of the best players on the transfer market.

Averaged 18, 6 and 6 this past season.

Looks like Arkansas should have the clear lead over those other programa, but how bad does Muss really want him.

Only 6'1" shot 34% from 3 this year. He must be blazing fast to the rack.
