Yeah, I'm really not too worried. I'd prefer to win big all throughout the season and roll that straight into the post season. That recipe doesn't seem to work in college baseball.
I'd rather take some lumps in the regular season if that means getting everything fine tuned and tweaked for later in the year for a strong post season run.

This is the disappointing thing to me, I was optimistic about our pitching early but we’re starting out in the hole way too many times. I like our bullpen but they are having to come in and get us out of jams too many times.
Our hitting is sufficient enough to overcome some of it but we should be kicking tail instead of playing catchup. I didn’t see this coming at the start of the season.

I missed the first part of the game that gage wood started but assumed he didn’t do well. How early was he pulled and was he just not throwing strikes? Thanks…

You mean the guy that had pitched 7 inning on the year and hasn’t had an appearance since February?

It went bad. Wood’s best pitch is the high fastball. A&M wasn’t swinging at it and the ump had a low strike zone.
On a positive note GG looked like the ace we were hoping for. Probably the most effective pitcher against A&Ms potent offense.

Just think if we got Wood, Gaeckle, Foutch, and Coil all available and pitching well consistently.
Do we have any idea when we can expect to see Coil in a game again?

I feel like our approach has reverted back to last year.
It's like we put a lid on the aggression at the plate.
We are taking so many pitches right down the middle instead of swinging the bat. That's no way to get your mojo back on offense.
If it's a meatball SWING THE DAMN BAT.. I don't care what count it is.
Two things that are happening with our current approach.. we aren't getting guys on base, and we have started to chase really BAD pitches due to being behind in the count constantly.
We're letting the opposing pitcher dictate the game instead of us.
If we will start showing aggression early then opposing pitchers will be more prone to walk us.
We just have to adjust accordingly, but as of right now we haven't.

I'm still mostly disappointed in our pitching more than anything. Root is lucky to get to the 5th, we seem to never have guys that can go deep. First bullpen guy gives up a huge HR and we are in a big hole early yet again.
I just don't think we'll have the pitching this year unfortunately. Vols-LSU two aces dealing 0-0 in the 6th, Texas beats A&M 2 -1, feels like we just don't have that.

It’s kinda crazy how we’ve taken Friday starters from other teams as our Sunday starters the last two years yet still our starting pitching seems to never quite get over the hump
Posted on 4/26/25 at 8:52 am to gohogs141
We’ve been in a funk since Souza got hurt. Who woulda thunk he was the key to success?
Hard to tell if this is just a mid season slump or regression to the mean. I suspected the Vandy road sweep was an anomaly.

I think it’s a little bit of a regression. This is a B+ team on average, but with potential to be a solid “A” if our pitching all comes together (Coil back, Wood back to his old self, Gaeckle and Foutch consistently giving us their good stuff).

There's no doubt pitching isn't as good as previous years, but it's good enough to keep us in all these games.
We have lost 2 of 7, but out of those seven losses only one was out of reach.
Too many wasted opportunities at the plate in those games. Some of it is bad luck, but a lot of it is a bad approach. We cannot trust these SEC umps to get us out of this slump. If we would just start being more aggressive at the plate, early in the count, it would help. Yes I know that 3-2 pitch was a ball guys(called a strike), but you had two pitches in that at bat that were middle middle and you sat on it.
Last night when we got out to that two run lead we were in control, but we started taking too many pitches after that and let their starter get into a rhythm. We easily could have scored 2 more runs in those early innings if we had just been aggressive.
For example, Davalan, his first two AB's he had 2 pitches that he would mash if he had just swung the bat(which he had been doing all year) Instead he sat on them and ended up doing something he hasn't done all year by chasing pitches that weren't remotely close to being a strike. Resulting in back to back K's.
One thing is for certain moving forward, we are going to face teams that have guys hitting a lot better than early in the season. We are going to give up some runs. So we really REALLY need our offense to sack up and start being aggressive against their pitchers.

Yeah our pitching just seems to fall off a cliff. Same as last year where even Smith was struggling late into rocked in the regional then everyone else is a crapshoot. Now we're just worse at the ace spot and the crapshoot behind him is also worse.

There's definitely been some tendencies with our starters.
I think DVH will start giving them a shorter leash if they start struggling. We have enough quality bullpen arms to give us a few innings.
But if our offense picks it up then I won't be as concerned letting our starters battle thru some tough innings.
