He will have them next year but you can bet our guard play will be garbage.
This team could make the elite 8 or be eliminated the 1st weekend. I'll go with the ladder.

We don't have that killer instinct on D. Billy Goat needs to punch a few players in the mouth to wake them up. You can tell this guy wants it but the others don't seem like they do.

It is a night and day difference watching how Musselman's teams played defense compared to Cal's.

Now offensively you could say the same in reverse.

But we saw how far defense could take you in the tournament. Offense can take you far as well, but at a much lower clip. Sometimes the shots don't fall, but if you have a solid defense to fall back on you stand a chance at winning regardless.

Cal really needs to bring in a defensive assistant coach that can get thru to these kids he recruits. I'm tired of seeing break downs, and poor rebounding.

All that being said we need our starting 5 to have Billy in it. He's the best on ball defender we have, and he is disruptive.

On the flip side he fouls too much, turns the ball over and can’t shoot 3s.

This team is going to live and die shooting 3s. Billy goat is a liability there.

At this point you have to put a premium on defense.

We are giving up way too many points. Until they improve that, it's not going to be pretty.

Kenny Payne has 20 years as a coach, isn't he responsible for the shitty inside play

Just wait until FL game soon, they absolutely dominated Bama down low so bad. Can only imagine us.

They seem to be rounding into form, and we are going the opposite direction.

Florida starts 3 guys 6'10" and up.

We can match that, but Cal hasn't done that all year. Might be something worth trying.

If we can contain Boogie and Xaivian, by keeping them out of lane we can beat them. Force them to shoot 3's.

Which means our guards will have to keep the ball in front of them. Moving their feet.

The rest of the team needs to stop relying on Darius to do all the work... getting a goose egg from Knox and Pringle is usually gonna be an automatic L.
Too much talent to not play well in a big game like last Saturday.
Might be time to lengthen the bench until the "stars" get the message.

What a shift from 2018.. team that won the title had no one on the team taller than 6'8

The biggest issue we have is we simply don’t stop the ball out on the floor. Teams dribble drive on us all day long. Our inside play, while not great, would probably be good enough if we’d simply do that. Most Jr. High teams know this.

I have a girl on my peewee team. Zone defense she can't help but go cover the ball on the opposite side of the court. Leaves her "house" wide open for somebody to come and take an easy shot.

I have told her 30000 times do not leave your "House". She still does it. It's frustrating.

I am sure Cal cusses in his head like I do when one of our slow bigs comes up top and instead of switching and moving back down stand out at the top of the key and leaves the lane wide open for a lay up.

I think the bigs do a pretty decent job getting back into the lane after screens/help. Pringle and Ewin.

Acuff, Thomas and Brazile are terrible about keeping folks out of the lane and stopping the dribble. Wagner is better than those 3, but still isn’t great.

Brazile is a very imperfect defender. Not enough lateral quickness/ technique to stop the dribble and not strong enough to guard the post. Leaves him blocking shots, which kills his rebounding or trying to play help D which usually means easy 3 or layups.

Agree with guy above, it mostly starts with not stopping the dribble and not being able to keep Brazile out of difficult match ups. He’s a mis match both high and low that teams exploit with a guard/wing or strong post depending where he gets stuck in the half court.

Cal has had a week with ammunition of an embarrassing performance at home against uk. Cautiously optimistic that we come out much improved against state.
