This team feels like they're going to get NCST'd.

They have some tough series on the road at South Carolina, Kentucky and A&M.

DVH has been doing this a lot longer than me but this lineup right here seems like a no-brainer to me…

It's so weird because no one can deny we're lacking offensively, but nothing really stands out to me about our plate approach as particularly awful on a consistent basis.

The performances so far away from home seem significantly worse so maybe we make Omaha before we go 1-2 with no runs.

Suffice it to say that we were winning at an unsustainable clip. Hell, 10 conference losses might win an SEC title most years (though likely not this year).

Our pitching is good but seems to have come back down to earth a bit against SEC bats.

It’s not hyperbolic to say this team is simply not good offensively. Allowing a freshman with a 4.0+ ERA — who was supposed to be a 2-3 inning opener — to throw 8 scoreless against us should be a wake up call.

So far this season we’ve gotten on base without hitting. Bama’s pitchers didn’t give up free passes and their defense was solid.

The blazing below .150 batting average the last two games won't win you many games in this league.

Got that #1 monkey off our backs. Not upset. Was hoping it would come sooner rather than later. Don’t like losing obviously, but would rather lose a series now and take care of business against UK and aTm later.

Man Kentucky has an insanely backloaded schedule.

Tenn
@USCe
Ark
@UF
Vandy

To end the year.

Guess it could be worse, Florida at 18-17 7-8 in danger of not making the NCAAT as a preseason top 5 team.

They avoided the sweep at home vs USCe after getting swept at Mizzou only to now have to go to Vandy and Ark back to back with Tenn, UK, @UGA after that to end the year.

UF better wake up immediately or what a crazy spiral. They are out of time.

Alright boys we are halfway through the SEC season. Here are the slash lines + OPS of the 12 guys who have double digit at bats in SEC play (sorted by OPS).

1. Aloy - .283/.429/.566/.995
2. Sprague-Lott - .265/.410/.551/.961
3. Stovall - .310/.406/.552/.958
4. Souza - .263/.349/.579/.928
5. Holt - .273/.333/.545/.877
6. McLaughlin - .200/.382/.400/.782
7. Lovich - .182/.357/.409/.766
8. Helfrick - .200/.250/.467/.717
9. Diggs - .210/.279/.419/.698
10. White - .267/.353/.311/.664
11. Edmunson - .240/.321/.320/.641
12. Wilmsmeyer - .180/.241/.200/.441

Some observations -

1. Souza and Holt have to keep seeing more playing time, full stop.

2. I kinda forgot about Lovich. Maybe Dave did too?

3. Helfrick’s OPS was higher than I thought it’d be. Not much of a singles hitter I guess.

4. We have GOT to get Diggs going. Man he’s really been in a funk lately.

5. Wilmsmeyer’s slash line is just pitiful… a full 200 points less in OPS than the next lowest guy.

Wilmsmeyer needs to sit.

We have half a season’s worth of work to judge him by now, and he’s this year’s John Bolton.

Zero pop, strikes out a lot, and you’re basically praying for a walk at this point, and his defense isn’t good enough to justify being an automatic out each time he comes to the plate.

It’s time to give Edmunson a shot full time in CF.

I’ll give Helfrick some grace. He’s young and hits the ball *extremely* hard, they just tend to be right at a defensive player. Hard hit balls are what you want, and he hits a lot of them when he gets a bat on a ball. He belted a grounder yesterday that would’ve killed someone and been a standup double against a lesser 3rd baseman, but was smothered for a 5-3 putout.

Vandy and Ark

Two teams I have no idea what to make of (and one of them is my own ).

Vandy is very bipolar this year. They swept Auburn, then got swept by USC (who I don’t think is very good), then squeaked out 3 games against Mizzou but all were razor thin, then handled LSU, then got absolutely blasted by A&M. As John Sterling says, “That's baseball, Suzyn.”

Despite Kentucky’s record, I think A&M is the best team in the conference this year. They remind me of that 2022 Tennessee team who just ran through the SEC and beat everyone’s arse.

I had a discussion with my dad as we watched the aggies in some games recently and we agreed that as of right now they are better than Arkansas.

I could see Kentucky winning the SEC and disappear in a regional.

Aggies winning the West and make it to Omaha.
